2nd & last Friday of every month | 1pm - 1.35pm | Tyneside Pottery Works, Bardon Mill, NE47 7HU
The original founders, Robert Errington and William Reay, established their pottery at Bardon Mill in 1878, in the once water powered woollen mill. Since Victorian times Errington Reay has remained a traditional family run pottery.
Join Karl outside our Beehive kiln where he will talk about the process that goes into making the pots, history of Errington Reay and how the kiln is fired, answering all your questions along the way. Come take a look behind the workshop doors and be guided through our drying room full of pots to see our potters at the wheel. Get a feel for what goes into the creation of each piece and the skill required that goes into making our world famous garden pots and one of a kind gallery pieces.
We practice traditional ways of hand throwing, passed down through generations which together with specialised salt glazing give Errington Reay pottery its truly unique textured finish. Still in use today is our large Beehive kiln which is fired on a regular basis with over 500 pots at a time.
Each tour will begin outside the kiln and last approximately 35 minutes depending on how much Karl talks!
Finish your visit with a browse around the pottery for an extensive range of garden pots, plants and garden decoration. In our gallery you will find handmade one of a kind pieces for the home and a wide variety of houseplants.
Don't forget to look in our visitors centre in the old Newcastle kiln to see more information on the 145 year history of Britain's last remaining commercial salt glazed pottery.
