Heatherslaw Light Railway on Ford & Etal Estates is the most northerly steam railway in England. This fifteen-inch gauge railway runs through beautiful countryside between Heatherslaw and Etal Castle, a return journey of 6.4 km that takes 20-25 minutes each way. The track runs along the banks of the River Till where swans, heron, ducks and the occasional otter make their home. On sunny days keep an eye out for hares basking in the fields. The service operates seven days a week in season. The first train runs from Heatherslaw Station at 11:00am and on the hour thereafter. The last train from Heatherslaw to Etal is at 15:00 (16:00 in peak season). The return journey runs from Etal on the half-hour with the first train at 11:30 and the last train at 15:30 (16:30 in peak season). Don’t miss seeing how the steam locomotive is turned around on a turntable at Etal station so that it is facing the right way for the return journey. There is wheelchair access to some carriages, but you are advised to reserve these in advance to avoid disappointment. Dogs welcome for free. For further information visit the website.
