We are a family-owned estate that is putting ecological renewal at the heart of our long-term plan.
The Hepple Estate is host to some wonderful charismatic species. We have curlew, red grouse and lapwing which are characteristic of open moorland and upland sheep farms, but despite decades of classic conservation work, we have not found it easy to outgrow the national pattern of decline.
In 2020 we started on a radical new direction with a plan we call ‘managed wilding’. This looks at building the base of the food-chain, from water, soil carbon and fungal mycorrhiza to diverse vegetation and the insect population.
We hope this will amplify biodiversity significantly over the whole 4,000 acres, and help support both the rare species we have and be an attractive place to settle for those we have lost.
Since starting the project we have removed all sheep from the estate, replacing them with larger grazing animals such as our pedigree longhorns, Highland cattle, Mangalica pigs and Exmoor ponies. We have removed over 13km of internal fencing and converted to organic & pasture-fed farming. We have created wetland ponds and networks now totalling over 10 acres and have undertaken over 400 acres of peat restoration, as well as large amounts of tree and scrub planting.
We are now offering high quality experiences on site, allowing visitors to learn about our rewilding practises. These include a mixture of nature-focused guided walks, bespoke & private tours and premium events and courses.
Our guided walks have been curated by Richard Thompson, our resident naturalist who has grown up in the valley but learnt his trade around Britain, we will explain our Wilding management, reveal some of the hidden gems inaccessible to the casual visitor and immerse you in the wild and wondrous nature of the Estate. Come prepared to learn. Topics covered by our various guided walks include a leg-stretching moor walk, a deep-dive into groups such as wildflowers or fungi, and foraging & gin themed adventures. Days generally include a locally sourced picnic lunch.
If you prefer a private experience, we can arrange top quality days for any size of group. These days can be as adventurous as you like and can be tailored to fit around any special interests within the group. Luxury lunches available and we are happy to collaborate with accommodations to offer a bespoke package.
We are also hosting a variety of special events that include photography masterclasses with professional photographers, wildlife tracking courses and assessments, professional botany certifications and nocturnal wildlife & stargazing experiences. If you would like to enquire about hosting an event with Hepple Wilds, please get in touch.
Recent feedback from our events include:
“The day was just fantastic. Excellent host, excellent group to wander round with. The walk was beautiful, we learned so much.”
“What you are trying to do at Hepple is truly inspiring. If we remember half of the information that Richard passed on to us we will be amazed.”
