Welcome to Wallington Estate Northumberland
Sitting in a rural corner of Northumberland yet only 20 miles northwest of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Wallington is the largest, intact estate in the care of the National Trust at 13,500 acres. Here you'll find a historic house set in rolling hills with extensive woodlands and a beautiful walled garden. Take time to explore and discover the variety of spaces, both indoors and out and keep your eyes peeled for the native wildlife.
Make yourself at home
Once home to the unconventional and socialist Trevelyan family, Wallington House, affectionately known as Wallington Hall Northumberland, displays thousands of beautiful items including nationally important book and ceramics collections.
You can explore the history of Northumberland in huge pre-Raphaelite paintings around the Central Hall or take time to discover the beautiful furniture, treasured collections, and quirky curiosities in each room. Ask the team about some of the famous visitors over the last 300 years.
Feel free to take a seat in the Reading Room, complete with a child's book nook, and browse the bookcases for one that piques your interest for a moment of pause.
Discover a secret garden at Wallington, Northumberland
The house is surrounded by an informal landscape of lawns, lakes, woodland, parkland, and farmland, just waiting to be explored. Don’t miss the hidden walled garden, nestled in the east woods. It was beloved by Lady Mary Trevelyan and remains a beautiful haven whatever the season. Enter through Neptune’s Gate, sweep down the stone staircase, past the Mary Pool and soak up the tranquil atmosphere, whilst wandering past the colourful borders.
Explore in every season
No matter what time of year you visit, there’s always something special to enjoy. Look out for signs of spring from the wildlife hide and don't miss the springtime spectacle of the purple crocus lawn in the walled garden when 100,000 crocuses are in bloom in early March. Wander beneath dappled leaves on the riverwalk in summer, walk through the woods on a crisp autumn day and rejoice in the festive cheer of the House at Christmas.
Cycling at Wallington
For an active, family adventure day out, the Dragon cycle trail has been designed with families in mind. This safe, entry level trail is the ideal way to get out and about and enjoy spotting wildlife and far-reaching views across Northumberland. This family-friendly, traffic-free cycling trail is open all year round. If you can’t get your own bikes here, make use of the cycle hire facility (open seasonally, check the website for opening times).
Family fun
With four outdoor play parks you are spoilt for choice for spaces to burn off steam. Will your favourite be the play fort, with its rope bridge and turrets or the adventure playground where you can fly along the zip line. Maybe the play train and station platform will have your family entertained for hours or perhaps the Little Acorns play space with its giant tree trunk steps, wild art station and willow tunnel will be your perfect spot for play.
Eating and shopping
Indulge yourself with a tasty snack or hot meal in the cosy Clocktower Café. Pick up a souvenir or take home a taste of Northumberland with plenty to choose from in our shops. Take inspiration from our flourishing gardens and buy herbs or plants from our plant centre.
