Home Away from Home!

Victoria N, Gateshead, United Kingdom
I enjoyed a stay in the newly built lodges at Leaplish in Kielder with friends and family. It was absolutely stunning inside and out, with every modern appliance, as well as a Playstation and flat screen TV. The hot tub outside was amazing. The views, the forest, the woodland smells, everything was fantastic. You are stone's throw away from the Visitor's Centre, the lake on which you can have a boat tour, swimming pool, gift shop, restaurant/bar and even crazy golf. It was such a relaxing weekend. It certainly wasn't cheap, however well worth the money. You are also close to Kielder Observatory and the castle.

Wet but wonderful

Daibhidh P, Newton Aycliffe, United Kingdom
Excellent place to visit with great wooden lodges. Everything you will need is provided for you. I would recommend you turn up at 4pm which is the book in time. Take plenty of food unless you plan on eating out. It is an hours drive to decent supermarket. Also please be aware there is no phone signal at Kielder but there is wifi at reception.

Lovely stay

Elle E, Newcastle, United Kingdom
Our second time here, this time we upgraded to an Otterstone but all the hot tub ones were already booked. The layout and size was excellent, I much preferred it to the Redesdale we stayed in last time. The view was significantly better although the Otterstones with hot tubs in front of us seemed full of people who stewed in the hot tub from dawn until dusk while their dogs roamed free as the gardens are open plan without fencing. I did like the little touches such as tea and coffee left in the lodge and midge spray but the complementary toiletries contained several hair conditioners and only one tiny shower gel between us so could not be relied upon. The arrival was chaotic, not all of the lodges were ready by 4pm which is unacceptable given such a late check in time. Some were ready but keys weren't handed over until 4pm. Instead welcome drinks of Prosecco and orange juice were offered meaning too many people were milling around the small reception. It seemed an unnecessary extra and was more in keeping with the hot tub market than the outdoors adventure holiday it had been previously. The pub on site was fully booked for dinner when we arrived at 5:30 although they did allow us to use a table that was reserved at a later time eventually. Service was slow and haphazard but the food was enjoyable although expensive for what it was. The Osprey ferry only runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays and that meant only one option to use it on our 3 night stay. They also decided to run the morning schedule only (ie two ferries) cancelling the afternoon services for no apparent reason which made it difficult to get out and return later. We opted to just do the full circle in one instead. The new lodges are now in situ but did not appeal to me for their forest setting in the area formally used for touring caravans. They seemed very dark with sunlight unable to get through the trees, I prefer the opportunity to sit outside in the sun where there are less midges. The pool was excellent as always, the changing area is useful for families with about 4 large cubicles and the lockers are free. You do need to book as only 20 people can use the pool at any one time. The volunteers manning osprey watch were lovely and very good with the children. We enjoyed building our own wooden Ospreys and using the telescopes. We enjoyed Tower Knowe visitor centre and Kielder castle, excellent cake in the cafe! The Gruffalo trail was great for young children but you need to download the app before you go as no signal at all and some of the trail would be difficult with a buggy or pram. Our 6 year old managed to walk it without difficulties. The toll drive is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles so we couldn't do it. This costs £12. Parking is £5 a day (we visited before check in so didn't have a free pass at that stage). You need coins for the meter as there is no attendant or change machine. It is advertised that cash back is available in the shops as no cash points around but I was refused as they didn't have a big enough float so bring cash with you, plus plenty of snacks etc. The shop sold more gifts than food produce and biscuits and cakes were rather more artisan and therefore expensive than our children actually required. All in all we loved the break but as an outdoors holiday, the attempts at luxury fell short for us. We'd stay again but only if there was a reasonable discount as it isn't always the best value compared with other options.

Lovely location

Eric K,
Lovely location and the log cabins are well appointed. The hot tubs are amazing. However they cabins do need some tlc. For example the door was rotten and now needs replacing. If they had decorated regularly then this could have been avoided

Excellent Fishing Venue

StevieBoyd65, Paisley, United Kingdom
Stayed at Leaplish 5th-12th May 2017. This was our 2nd visits to Kielder and once again we found it to faultless. We stayed in lodge 15 (Cheviot Superior) which sat at the top of the hill with partial view of the loch sorry Lake! We found it ideal for our requirements as there were 5 anglers in total. Lodge was very comfortable and spotless. Staff on site were friendly and very helpful. We fished for four days (£10 per day, 8 fish limit) and every day we caught. There plenty of other outdoor activities although we only fished. There is a lovely bar and restaurant on site along with a small shop which seemed to carry most essential items. Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fishing in beautiful surroundings. Will be back next year for more of the same. Thanks to everyone at Leaplish
