The Coach House, a real delight in Northumbria

J0hn_C1949, Norwich, United Kingdom
It was a long 6-hour drive in the wet mainly along the A1 from Norfolk to Northumbria but as we approached The Coach House and drove along the Breamish Valley road we knew it had been worthwhile. The Coach House is one of 8 cottages located in the village of Ingram and is part of the main building where the owners Trysha and Graham live. Out front there is a paddock and stables where their horses Archie and Ben reside. The cottage itself is very spacious and comfortable and includes everything necessary for a most enjoyable stay. And by the way, keep an eye out for Snuggles the cat - he is beautiful but needs a little coaxing as he’s a bit shy. As a city dweller, I really appreciated the peace and quiet and the ‘black’ nights. There appears to be no through traffic; the road terminates at a farm a couple of miles away, which is a good spot to leave your car and walk up to Linhope Spout, a trip I really recommend although it’s not for the faint hearted and you really need good walking shoes or boots. As it was late May when we stayed the days were long and I was able to get out early with my camera. I know it’s not for everyone but walking up the valley at just after four in the morning and watching the sun rise above the hills is breath-taking. Gorse bushes grow in profusion along the banks of the river Breamish and as the first rays of the sun catch them they look magnificent. The sun also highlights the nearby hills and the heather covering them comes to life in a range of many colours. There is much wildlife to see. Obviously, sheep and lambs as well as cattle along with many species of birds (oyster catcher, heron, chaffinch, robin, thrush etc.), as well as hares and deer. It is an area where the red squirrel has made a comeback but unfortunately, I only caught a glimpse of one while driving. On my second walk, I met someone walking toward Ingram (good to know I’m not the only one crazy enough to be up so early) who told me about Hedgely Lakes and how to find them. They are about two and half miles from The Coach House and well worth a visit. For my last early walk I’d managed to convince my wife (not usually such an early riser) to come with me. She loved it and will I’m sure accompany me on other such walks. Apart from the valley, we spent time at Alnwick Garden, which is quite amazing, and contains some very unusual varieties of plants, a coastal walk from Craster via Dustanburgh Castle then on to Embleton (and back again of course!) and finally Cragside, a National Trust property that must be one of the jewels in the north. Although we drove up in the rain the weather improved for the rest of our week but, if we had been confined, the cottage is an ideal place to curl up with a good book or watch some of the hundreds of DVDs that are available. Can I recommend The Coach House? When we returned home we immediately booked another week’s stay at the end of October as we would like to see it in the autumn which I think is recommendation enough. Thank you Trysha and Graham we had a most wonderful time with you and are so looking forward to our next visit.

The Retreat

Bluemoppet, Derby, United Kingdom
Recently stayed at The Retreat for the second time. Another great holiday in this truly superb cottage. Very lucky with the weather though the location and facilities at this cottage makes it difficult to leave to go exploring. Nothing appears to be too much trouble for the owners.Had the added bonus of seeing a red squirrel on the patio! Hope to visit again in the future.

A gem in the cheviot hills

We stayed in the Bluebell byre. Beautiful cottage fitted out to a very high standard. Graham and Trysha could not have been more helpful; exceptional hosts.Pizza night is not to be missed. Perfect location to explore the surrounding area. Great walks right on the door step. Mobility friendly with grab rails in bathroom and outside. Despite the rain, we had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. Will definitely be back. Would give this more than 5 out of 5 rating- superb!

Luxurious stay at gate lodge cottage

Immaculate Cottage set in a very quite location, very spacious with every home from home luxury. Trysha and Graham were most welcoming and provided an abundance of tourist information and walks. Would not hesitate to stay here again

Out of this world

Just returned from such a memorable holiday at the Retreat, one of the Cheviot holiday cottages. The accommodation, the attention to detail and the surrounding area were superb. This is true luxury at its best. Situated in the National Park walks and cycle rides were stunning and on our doorstep. What was so special was the peace and tranquility and wildlife on the patio no need to venture far. However a 30 minute car journey and you have the stunning Northumbrian coastline to explore or a multitude of castles and historic houses to enjoy. Our hosts were unobtrusive but always available for advice about the area and if you wished Trisha's lovely food to enjoy. One of our best holidays Thankyou to Graham and Trisha your attention to detail is second to none and cannot wait to return.
