Kielder winter family break

Ian D,
Fantastic family break with no 4G and no phone signal! Absolutely perfect. Wifi available if you want it but for me it was family time. We walked, laughed, star gazed, swam, zip wired, talked, ate and spent some real time together. My kids favourite part was playing cards and drinking hot chocolate under the stars 😍 brilliant time away. Thanks to all in the Kielder region

Calvert Trust Kielder replied: Hello Ian, Lovely to see/hear that you and your family enjoyed your break with us. It truly is magical sitting out under the stars! Hope to have you with us again Best wishes, Lynsey Bell Head of Guest Services

This is an incredible place!

Alison L, Kingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom
I booked this break to take my daughter, who has a learning disability and autism on an activity holiday. We were in the main centre .The room was clean, beds comfortable & it was quiet. The food was very good, with choices at each meal. But the main reason for Calvert Trust being great is the staff working there All the staff at the centre are friendly, welcoming & helpful- nothing was too much trouble. We had a choice of activities, which we chose the night before- two per day on our package. The instructors are very knowledgeable & experienced with people with disabilities. They make sure everyone participating in the activity is able to experience the full activity- eg the zip wire activity or the King swing. My daughter finds climbing difficult as she hasn't much strength in her arms & has poor coordination & balance. Both the instructors helped her & encouraged her to climb up the indoor climbing wall. Everyone's achievements are celebrated & no one is excluded. There are plenty of activities available- archery, canoeing, sailing, climbing, zip wire, King swing, orienteering, to name a few! There is also a hydrotherapy pool and a sensory roomwhich can be booked on an hourly basis. There is a bar/ shop in the reception area & staff organise an activity each evening. There is a games room with table tennis etc to keep the family occupied Wi Fi is only available in certain areas of the centre, so those areas tend to be occupied by the teens on their phones or tablets!! All in all, a relaxed place to spend time in, where I felt my daughter was safe and happy.

Calvert Trust Kielder replied: Dear Alison, Thank you for the lovely comments, i will make sure these are passed on to the staff. I am glad your daughter enjoyed her stay and experienced a wide range of the activities on offer. Hopefully we will have the pleasure of welcoming you both to us again in 2017. Kind regards, Lynsey Bell Head of Guest Services

Family Adventure Day that exceeded expectations

Pete M, Newcastle
For my 40th the family bought me a Family Adventure day, so off we went with a general idea of outdoors adventures and what we experienced was fantastic, The instructor Rich and Pip were fantastic and crammed loads into a day and were very flexible to try and balance the activities to the changeable weather. The whole family had a blast and still regularly tell family and friends about how good it was. Cant recommend enough, we did archery, climbing, high ropes, kind swing, Velcro Olympics, we mixed in with other people whilst we were there and had great fun. The catering was great hope to go back soon.

Faultless relaxing break!!

Sonandywest,
We came here from the midlands as wanted to explore this area. We normally go on a uk holiday each year and take mum In law away (as well as abroad holidays for us), she is a part time wheelchair user, not through disability though, just simply from age as has had hip and knee replacements and cannot walk far without being in pain. We booked The Bradbury chalet and it was truly amazing!! She could access the rooms with ease, and the walk in showers had grab rails and not slip floors so she felt really comfortable using on her own, and there were arms by the toilet seats to help her get up and down which were fantastic. For us, a lovely modern chalet with everything we could wish for, even a hot tub, steam room and fantastic views!! Wifi in the chalet was also very good, although there is very little signal in around around Kielder Water and Forest Park (not a bad thing lol) There is a nature trail that takes you under the road and into the lakeside way trail and it is wheelchair friendly. We attractive people and being able to walk for miles and having mum in law in the wheelchair and her being able to come with us was brilliant. We didn't use any of the onsite facilities as was only there for a long weekend. We did book again to go back for a week next year and cannot wait!!

Why has the Calvert Trust not updated its disabled access equipment inside their main building?

jill n, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Two support workers and one wheelchair user came to stay for four nights and five days. We stayed in Cabin number two, close to the main building which was very convenient as our wheelchair user is difficult to push on slopes. Our cabin was spacious and well equipped but the furnishings and decor were old and shabby and the bedding and curtains were frayed. We booked several activities including the hydro pool and the sensory room. We found that there was nowhere suitable for the person we support to get changed in and out of his swim suit and there was no suitable hoisting equipment to get in and out of the pool. There was a manual chair hoist with no seat belt and the person we support would not have been safe using this. I was required to go to reception and wait until there was someone available to go and find the one mobile hoist that the trust owned. This was brought to the pool and in a very convoluted manner, the person we supported was hoisted from their chair onto a mobile bed that was too narrow for them. This also had no belt but was the best option available. The bed was then moved alongside the manual chair hoist and attached to it, the bed was then manually maneuvered into the pool. The person we supported became very agitated during this lengthy process and had to go through it all again to get out of the pool and back into the wheelchair. When using the sensory room we again found no hoisting equipment and were therefore unable to use the floor activites. We payed £600 to come and stay in a place designated as a disabled access site and feel that it was not value for money due to the lack of modern overhead tracking and hoisting equipment. The equipment that was there looked old and in need of replacements. There seems to have been little investment in updating the site, the cabins and the equipment. Although we did enjoy our stay and staff responded well to our requests, the experience could have been so much better if the equipment had been suitable for our needs and the needs of other wheelchair users.
