A Victorian country hall in extensive grounds overlooking the North Tyne river and Dunterley Fell. Award-winning restaurant with Les Routier Gold Plate and AA rosette. Real ale, log fires and candlelit dinners. A warm, friendly atmosphere. Although undoubtedly Northumbria's premier sporting hotel with its sought after salmon beats, cricket and football field and indoor swimming pool it is also the nearest hotel to Kielder Water, is opposite Bellingham's renowned golf course and handy for walking on Hadrian's wall, the Pennine Way and Kielder Forest! But, still well over half of the hotel's guests are tourists out to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Northumberland's National Park and sample the hotels widely respected food and hospitality.

Pennine way accommodation

A nice but a bit dated hotel. Rooms are good and spacious, bathroom with a bath and shower. Meals are very nice, but again maybe a bit 1970's. Hotel has a swimming pool (popular with locals) and a sauna

Great stay with amazing food

Stayed for two nights after taking up a special offer received by email. Value for money was fantastic. Really nice hotel - we ate there both nights - completely different menu each night - soups and main courses were simply delicious - the Chefs there do a brilliant job. Best mushroom soup I have ever had!! We had a room with a balcony overlooking the North Tyne Valley - we didn't know we had a balcony until we arrived which was a lovely surprise. It's not often I get the chance to complement a hotel for catering for smokers but I can here. My wife smokes and the hotel allowed smoking on the balcony as long as the door was shut. I commend the hotel management for taking this decision. Smoking is not illegal and too often smokers are treated like lepers. We will definitely be back again. Thank you!!

Delicious food

Came here to celebrate my friends 40th birthday. We had a private room to ourselves and were very well looked after, staff were friendly and polite. There is a wide variety of food on the menu that caters for all tastes. Both the starter and main was mouth watering, full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend this to anyone as it is set in a beautiful location in Northumberland countryside.

superb food

Stayed for two nights. Room large and sell furnished. We had a balcony with a view to river. Very comfy bed with cotton bedding. Nice bathroom with toiletries provided. Really nice hospitality tray and bottled water on arrival. Only tiny complaint is the curtains are heavy weight but let in to much light for us. Pool was very warm, lovely after a long day out, changing area could be improved a bit. Food was excellent, good quality produce ,well cooked and well presented in a lovely conservatory with great views. The staff in all areas of the hotel are well presented, polite, friendly and helpful. This place is so relaxing I would love to visit again. I think there is a self catering section too. Nice area for walking, with a pretty village just around the corner.

Mixed feelings

My partner and I selected this hotel for a two night stop over on our way back down south after staying in the Scottish Highlands. Northumbria being such a beautiful region it seemed madness to just pass through. Our reservations about the hotel are very mixed as there are some big pluses and also minuses. On the plus side was the very large comfy bed and all the spotless white linen to be found around the hotel. The standard of cleanliness was high and the staff are very friendly and cheerful. The location is excellent and not far from local attractions. The hotel is set amongst fantastic scenery on the banks of the Tyne and is very homely. Negatives. The hotel does need some TLC and the management are clearly making an effort. The electric wiring in room 2 gives cause for concern, where we found the electric light switches were connected with the mains power. When we switched off the wall lights we switched off the TV and electric kettle! Also, the wiring in the shower cabinet was highly irregular and wrapped with insulation tape. Definitely would fail any health and safety check (see photo). Food wise we must have been unlucky where neither my partner nor myself could commend the cooking. There was so much salt in the sauces the two distinctly different dishes we chose were all most unpalatable. As a result the second night we ate out. Finally, on a rival we were greeted on reception by a man in a very grubby shirt, who certainly did not create the very best of first impressions. Bottom line would we go back, probably yes when passing through if we could be both assured off having a decent evening meal.
