Its a long walk from Hadrian's Wall

Donald H, Windermere, United Kingdom
It may be flat but two full miles is a lot of extra walking at each end of a day on Hadrian's Wall footpath, which was the purpose of my visit. It may be great for golf but for everything else its too far away. The road is dangerous with no footpath and the prices are astronomical compared to other Hadrian's wall B & Bs. Unfortunately, I booked late and could not get into Robin Hoods Inn, my preferred location.

Matfen Hall replied: Dear Donald, Thank you for sharing your experience and for your four star rating following your visit to Matfen Hall. I’m saddened having read your review that Matfen Hall may not have been the most appropriate venue for you given the purpose of your stay. I always take guest feedback very constructively in the interest of shaping our marketing material, offering and level of guest care. That being said, I’m not immediately sure what I’m able to take from your review in terms of learnings in order to better any of the above facets. Our location in proximity to Hadrian’s Wall is around two miles, as you have stated. This information is widely available to any of our guests both prior to and after arrival. We include an interactive map on our website that is powered by Google map data. Due to our rural location, many of the surrounding roads are ‘B roads’. Some do have footpaths alongside but, as I’m sure you’d expect, many don’t. Our reception and concierge team are able to advise on public transport options or to arrange for private transport to many of the nearby Hadrian’s Wall sites, for guests who would prefer not to walk. I can appreciate your comments relating to our pricing when compared with many independent B&Bs in the local area. I think that it’s important to keep in mind that we have so much more to offer in terms of guest facilities than most of the aforementioned B&Bs; Three distinct restaurant areas - one of which boasts two AA rosettes, a fully equipped Spa & Leisure centre, 24 hour housekeeping, room service and portering facilities, four star room amenities, complimentary high speed Wi-Fi, a 27 hole golf course as well as beautiful, historic, hotel public areas for our guests to explore, relax in and enjoy. With all of this in mind, we do continually monitor and review our accommodation pricing to ensure that we have an attractive and competitive set of rates, in line with other four star venues in the county. I do hope that you enjoyed visiting our beautiful county and had the chance to take in the history of Hadrian’s Wall. I hope that you’ll think of us for your next visit and enjoy all that we have to offer here at Matfen Hall. Peter J Dawson Operations Manager Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

An enjoyable stay

ChrisMB63, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The whole family was invited to stay for a couple of days for a birthday celebration by my brother in law who is a regular here for golfing weekends. The two rooms we had as a family were in a newer part of the hotel and were spacious, clean and well appointed and had a nice balcony. We ate in the golf club both nights and whilst the food and service were a bit slow, we were in no hurry so it suited us better. Food was standard fare with big portion sizes. Breakfast was excellent and based on that would like to sample dinner in the hotel next time we are down. I say next time as we also played golf on the lovely course in excellent weather with virtually no one else playing so we could take our time and go for our shots. The hotel grounds were very nicely tended and was nice to sit outside for a drink outside the conservatory as well. An added bonus was visiting the local village just a few yards away at the back of the hotel walking through the graveyard in the pitch black in the dead of night to visit the local pub which was a warm friendly place!

golf break Matfen Hall

PMBNorthYorkshire, North Yorkshire
Golf courses okay need to sort out the bunkers (no sand) bedrooms fantastic breakfast service & food in the main dining room very good. Sadly the evening meal in the conservatory was disgraceful I choose the bangers & mash which were served on a cold plate all the food was cold I returned it & was given another plate of food which was possibly the original re heated in the microwave not good. I think the staff thought a free cup of coffee which was warm was a good enough apology. If you stay here beware of the service in the conservatory. I was quite disgusted to have had food served cold in a hotel with such supposed high standards.

Matfen Hall replied: Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback following your recent stay. I'm pleased to read that so many aspects of your visit were enjoyable and met your expectations. I'll be sure to pass these comments along to the teams concerned. I'm saddened that your dish in the Conservatory Bistro was not as hot as it should have been. I suspect that it spent a little too long in transit before you received it, and I'm very sorry about this. I can assure you that, when replaced, your second dish was indeed a freshly prepared article. Incidentally, we don't have a microwave in the kitchen used to service the Conservatory. I'm perplexed by your comment relating to the coffee, as having spoken with the team, they have explained that given the option of something as a gesture of goodwill to hopefully reduce any bad feeling or inconvenience felt, this was your choice. I do hope that this incident has not marred your overall perception of Matfen Hall and that you'll choose to return again in the future. Should this be the case, please do contact us direct for the best available rates. Kind regards, Peter Dawson Operations Manager Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

A truly chilled experience at the Spa

ImboW, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
My boyfriend and I visited Matfen Hall's Aqua Vitae Spa yesterday. My boyfriend is an outdoorsy dude, who would prefer a walk up a hill to a lounge in a chair. HOWEVER, I was determind to find somewhere that would help him to properly relax after a week's worth of night shifts and show him that it's ok to sometimes just stop and take some time to yourself. BINGO. Matfen Hall Spa was indeed that place. We both appreciated the warmth of service from arrival to leaving the hotel. We were welcomed with a brew and a homemade biscuit. The facilities were clean, spacious and homely. We felt comfortable enough walking around in our robes with bare feet, in fact it felt a little like being at home (a much bigger version!) The afternoon tea was a delight and then the icing on the cake was our back, neck and shoulder massages by Cherise and Allie. These girls have magic hands and made us feel so comfortable and at ease. It was a truly luscious and indulgent experience and one that certainly loosened the knots. Cherise was wonderful throughout the day, ensuring that we had everything we needed and that we were happy. Our favourite three things were: 1. The warmth and welcoming attitude of the staff 2. The relaxation room; a gorgeous retreat of sheer sensory bliss. 3. The pool; a light, airy space with surprisingly warm water. None of that "oh s**t it's cold...keep swimming...keep swimming" business. 1 thing that could've been improved: 1. The hot tub seemed to be colder than the pool so we avoided it. Think it was just a technical fault! These things happen! I would also suggest checking when classes are on in the pool, as it can be quite loud when a class is on. But fun to watch! We wanted to join in! Thank you so much Matfen, we'd love to come back. Immie and Joe (the newly converted spa fan!) x
