Great time in this country hotel

Olivier B, valenciennes
A great couple of days in this great hotel. Great service, golf course. Lovely walks and surroundings a short drive from the airport. The food was great as well as the staff who were happy to help with any requests. Only niggle was the quality of the porridge before leaving but the continental selection made up for it. Would definitely return when the opportunity arise.

The staff are the stars of the show

We stayed in room “4” for 2 nights on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The bedroom/lounge is large, decorated in a comfortable country house style, very clean, quiet, with lovely views over the golf course. The bathroom is large and luxurious in a very modern style - which is an excellent contrast. Large fluffy brilliant white towels are provided and the bathroom is nice and warm, which is unusual for some older hotels. Prior to dinner you are seated in a comfortable lounge, where you can make your selection from the menu while enjoying complimentary olives and rice crackers. When you are suitably relaxed and your table is ready, you are shown to the adjoining “Library” Restaurant. A complimentary selection of breads and a small high quality appetizer is provided for you prior to your chosen meal being served. All of the food was excellent in both quality and taste. Breakfast is also served in the “Library”. As mentioned in other reviews the breakfast is not large, but it is certainly adequate and of excellent quality. The tastiest sausages and bacon I have eaten for a long time. One lunchtime we also had drinks and sandwiches in the conservatory. These were a little overpriced – but I altered my consumption accordingly, as I checked the prices before ordering. During our stay EVERY member of staff we had contact with, were friendly, efficient and a credit to the hotel. I believe that only happy workers can provide such superior service.

Matfen Hall replied: Thank you so much for your wonderful review, It's made it's way to our staff notice board! I'm very pleased that you enjoyed your visit and I hope that I'll be able to welcome you back in the near future. Kind regards, Peter J Dawson Operations Manager Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

Chill time

powfoot3, Scotland
I came here with my daughter for an overnight stay.My first time back since we were here for her 'hen day/night' last March(2016)We were in room 27,a quiet room, twin beds and a balcony. We had afternoon tea in a lovely room, overlooking the golf course.Sandwiches,scones,cakes:- Wimbledon strawberry theme! This was very relaxing and lovely to begin with . Then we were changed into our robes and headed to the spa:- swimming pool, hot tub, steam room, sauna, aromatherapy room,Ice showers. We also lay on the poolside beds.We had a latte at the 'Juice bar' .This could do with being a bit hotter. Dinner was in the conservatory.Very pleasant. My daughter loved the ' gin bottle' vases! I just love the gin!!!There are also tables and chairs outside to sit on. A comfortable sleep. The room has glass doors that close after the bathroom so any noise in the hallways is taken away. We had a lovely breakfast this morning, fruits, juice, and a Matfen cooked breakfast.Pawel was so polite and welcoming, he had a lovely manner.Thank-you.The plates are brought to you and staff wear white gloves which is a lovely, hygienic touch. It was such a lovely day today that we sat at the outside tables from the conservatory and had our coffee.looking onto the beautiful golf course we could have been a million miles from home. We had a walk around the grounds:- a yoga class was taking place in the garden. The gardener was hard at work too. Staff are very pleasant at Matfen and that is what makes the difference.Thankyou.

Relaxation at its best

Rooms well equipped and good standard. Facilities excellent. Staff achieve an excellent balance of efficiency whilst maintaining a friendly atmosphere. Whether in old or new part of the hall or new a very nice standard. Pool sauna and steam room setup one of the best if not the best we have visited.

Elegant country house hotel

DCM1a, Broughty Ferry Dundee
Went a short holiday, eight days, in the process of visiting four Country House Hotels as we find generally a high standard in good surroundings. Matfen was a little bit out of the way to find and did baffle my sat nav. As wi fi is poor in this area it was not surprising. Do not expect to get a good iPad signal From the moment we entered a very smart receptionist named Holly attended to all our needs in a polite and efficient manner. This was also reflected by all other staff we encountered which does show effective staff training. The restaurant was excellent, waiters wearing white gloves and for breakfast eggs Florentine was one of the best tasting. Room 31 was a lovely bright room and as an extra had a small balcony with table and chairs. The public rooms were all very tastefully furnished. To summarise, beautiful hotel and at £112 per room per night B&B was the least expensive of the four visited
