WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

Charming country house with excellent food

Natalia R,
My boyfriend and I were walking Hadrian's wall during this Easter and staying at Henshaw Barn was definitely the highlight among the places we visited. This is not one of those sterile places you stay in for a bed and shower, this B&B is a real country home with two perfectionist owners. Pauline and John are very welcoming and accommodating and were a pleasure to spend some time with. Also John used to be a chef so you are in for a real culinary treat, and I can honestly say that his home made black pudding is the best I have tried. We would love to stay there again!

B&B perfection!

Owners Pauline and John have a passion for perfection! My wife has an "eye for style" and looks forward to appraising any new B&B we visit. She was in awe as soon as we stepped into Henshaw Barn. Pauline has cut no corners in her choice of decorations, fittings and fabrics. Indeed, as we settled and got to know her, and she us, Pauline told us that Henshaw Barn had featured in a 2012 edition of the top style magazine "Country Homes and Interiors"! We were not surprised. Henshaw Barn boasts "Voyage" cushions, white duck feather pillows (with non-allergenic alternatives), and fine linen duvets hand-ironed... such attention to detail! There's even a cosy guest lounge, with complimentary bottled water and fresh milk. John is the chef and groundsman. He had freshly-baked scones to offer us on our arrival, and breakfast each morning was a delight. A traditional Northumbrian cooked breakfast is a hearty start to the day, with John's own-recipe black pudding a special feature, but there are lighter alternatives, including a delicious fresh fruit salad. John is also proud of his garden, and happy to point out the latest results of his and Pauline's hard work. He's very much in tune with local nature, too, and if you want to know about local wildlife, or when the latest lambs have been born at the farm next door, John's your man! Henshaw Barn is easily accessible from the main Newcastle to Carlisle road (traffic quietens down in the evening and the sounds are not intrusive), and the B&B is close to Once Brewed and Vindolanda. Henshaw is a lovely little hamlet too. Whether you are looking for a tourism base for Hadrian's Wall, or a comfortable idyll in which to relax and recharge, you can't do better than Henshaw Barn.

A wonderful stay

My wife and I stayed on the 2nd April 2017 for one night, but wished we stayed longer! We were welcomed by Pauline and John and offered a scone (delicious!) and tea, having a friendly welcoming chat before being shown our room. The place is immaculate, clean, looks stuning and very homely. Our room was no different. We had a super king size bed with en-suite and lovely views, a full range of teas, coffee and hot chocolate were provided in the room to. They provide evening meals when booked ahead which we opted for. Firstly the table was set like a high class restaurant, candles, cutlery perfectly polished and glasses absolutely spotless. This really makes you feel treated! We had a smokey veg hotpot which was amazing, served with rice and puy lentils and a kalette side. John's previous profession was a chef and I can't believe he was allowed to retire, but at least he's cooking at his B&B. We had desserts of poached pears and I had a lemon posset with fennel biscotti, yum! All so light to eat to. We had a lovely nights sleep and woke up to a similar set up for the breakfast table (except the candles!), a full range of jams, cereals with juice already on the table. We we're brought a dish of croissant, pain au chocolat and danish mini pastries. These alone were wonderful and were like the pastries you get on the continent, not the overly greasy/buttery ones here. We both had pancakes filled with raspberries which didn't last long. A perfect start to the day! On departure, I didn't read my confirmation email properly. They don't take cards, so a trip to a cashpoint in Haydon bridge was in order. John and Pauline were very patient with me on this, thank you! They do accept BACS payments however, to complete this we needed our security fob which was at home. Thank you for a wonderful stay, I'm pretty sure we'll be back!

Henshaw Barn replied: Thank you so much for your lovely and very detailed review - you came to us by chance, staying only for the one night - but it was such a pleasure to meet you, and we are delighted to find how much you enjoyed your brief stay with us. Thank you for your very kind and very generous words. Your advice re. tea, and obtaining locally, was much appreciated - you could even bathe in 'Ceylon' now, we have such quantities! And indeed it would be very lovely to see you again - were you able to make a return visit. Our thanks and very best wishes to you both.......Pauline and John.

Stayed in January.

What a little gem!! Been to a few B&Bs over the years and this is up at the top. We had a warm welcome with homemade scones and jam. The place was immaculate and very tastefully furnished. Everything was considered and we found our room well equipped, comfortable and cosy. The little sitting room upstairs was very comfortable with a larger room downstairs. And as for the breakfast . . . . .!!! We wished we had eaten our evening meal there! Pauline and John we very kind and considerate hosts, and we took a lot of their time chatting about the area. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again.

Henshaw Barn replied: You were unexpected but most welcome visitors in late February, and the most agreeable and appreciative of guests - how good it is that you found so much to like during your brief stay with us. Thank you so much for your recommendations, and for your lovely, uplifting review - so cheering at this this bleak time of year. And in late April we have the chance to see you again!......we are already very much looking forward to that. In the meantime our thanks, and very best wishes to you both, Pauline and John.

Delightful welcome, first class accommodation and food

Hils32, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom
Pauline and John couldn't have been more attentive to the needs of cold and bedraggled cyclists. Ideal location on Hadrian's Cycleway (National Cycle Network Route 72), midway between Bowness-on-Solway and Newcastle, and close to Vindolanda. I would simply echo all the other good things people have said and recommend Henshaw Barn highly.

Henshaw Barn replied: And how cold and bedraggled you were - with your dripping clothes (so wet they were making pools!) and needing to be put on the 'spin' cycle in the washing machine before being hung up to dry!!! But warmth, hot water, and good food put the world to rights, and the rigours of the day gradually receded....... Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review, and for your kind words and recommendations. It was such a pleasure to meet you, and we hope we may be fortunate enough to see you again should you to return to the area. With all our best wishes, Pauline and John.
