WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

Gorgeous house in iconic location

LIZ475, Norwich, United Kingdom
We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of April whilst attending Hexham Book Festival. We didn't need to go to the Festival as Pauline and John's house is filled with a large eclectic mix of interesting books! The house is beautifully furnished and our bedroom was sumptuous with a lovely en suite. Having the use of a lovely characterful sitting room was wonderful. John, a trained cook provided amazing breakfasts and evening meals. We found Pauline and John to be delightful, interesting hosts and despite working hard looking after us took the time to help us plan a walk on Hadrian's Wall as well as a visit to The Lake District and seemed genuinely interested in our accounts of our days out. We felt quite renewed following our visit and would highly recommend staying at Henshaw Barn.

Beautiful barn in stunning location

Sandra D, York, United Kingdom
On arrival at Henshaw Barn we were warmly welcomed by Pauline and John who immediately made us feel very much at home. The accommodation is superb, with great attention to detail and beautiful decor. We chose to have our evening meals at the barn and we were thrilled with the results. John is an outstanding and imaginative chef. Using both home grown and locally produced food, our meals were delicious, full of flavour and expertly served. In addition the breakfasts were amazing. We were spoiled for choice . The black pudding was the best we have ever tasted and the selection of fresh fruit and preserves delightful. Nothing was too much trouble for our amiable hosts. We arrived as guests and left as friends. Henshaw Barn is an absolute gem in a perfect setting.

Henshaw Barn replied: Many, many thanks for taking the time to write a review - and such a glowing and pleasing review! And it's such a huge compliment to find that guests "feel at home" in our home, and enjoy not only our accommodation, but also John's delicious, superbly fresh, and interesting food. We really appreciate your recommendations, and your warm and positive feedback, and we are glad that you had a happy, and convivial time with us. And it would be lovely to see you both again were you able to plan a return visit - all things Roman a must - but outside of that there remains so much more to do and discover. With all our good wishes, Pauline and John

Another wonderful visit!

Ann H, Snaith, United Kingdom
This was our fifth visit, this time with friends, to this lovely house in a stunning part of the country. We were given a warm welcome, as always, by Pauline and John, who are simply the best hosts ever. They have thought of everything that you could possibly need to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable - just read a few other reviews. On each of our visits we have chosen to have evening meal at ' the Barn'. Why go anywhere else when you can have a super meal prepared and cooked by an imaginative, very accomplished chef, right on the premises? Check out the website to view the menus. The breakfasts are fantastic too, catering for all tastes. You won't be disappointed! Pauline and John also have an extensive knowledge of the area and are eager to share this with guests, offering suggestions of places to visit depending on your interests. We now use Henshaw Barn as the bench mark for measuring B&Bs and, we can honestly say, we haven't yet found any to come anywhere near! Looking forward to our next visit.

Henshaw Barn replied: You are SO kind and SO supportive.....thank you for yet another lovely review.....bursting with positive comments and recommendations, SO encouraging for us - and hopefully of interest to others who may be seeking Hadrian's Wall accommodation. It is both a great honour, and a pleasure to have you visit us so frequently....this year bringing friends...(a very personal recommendation) and such a vote of confidence. There is another visit pending in July, (with yet more friends.) We hope your sixth visit will be equally pleasurable, in the knowledge that the warmest of welcomes awaits you! In the meantime our best wishes to you both, Pauline and John :-)

Charming country house with excellent food

Natalia R,
My boyfriend and I were walking Hadrian's wall during this Easter and staying at Henshaw Barn was definitely the highlight among the places we visited. This is not one of those sterile places you stay in for a bed and shower, this B&B is a real country home with two perfectionist owners. Pauline and John are very welcoming and accommodating and were a pleasure to spend some time with. Also John used to be a chef so you are in for a real culinary treat, and I can honestly say that his home made black pudding is the best I have tried. We would love to stay there again!

Henshaw Barn replied: It was such a pleasure to meet you both - young, vibrant, adventurous travellers - with lots of cultural, linguistic links - the Russian connection was of particular interest, and one that we will remember. Many thanks for your lovely review (and photo) and for your recommendations. We are SO pleased that you enjoyed your short stay with us. And were you able to fit in another visit to this very lovely part of the world - then we would be delighted to see you again. All our very best wishes, Pauline and John.

B&B perfection!

RadioGuyNottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Owners Pauline and John have a passion for perfection! My wife has an "eye for style" and looks forward to appraising any new B&B we visit. She was in awe as soon as we stepped into Henshaw Barn. Pauline has cut no corners in her choice of decorations, fittings and fabrics. Indeed, as we settled and got to know her, and she us, Pauline told us that Henshaw Barn had featured in a 2012 edition of the top style magazine "Country Homes and Interiors"! We were not surprised. Henshaw Barn boasts "Voyage" cushions, white duck feather pillows (with non-allergenic alternatives), and fine linen duvets hand-ironed... such attention to detail! There's even a cosy guest lounge, with complimentary bottled water and fresh milk. John is the chef and groundsman. He had freshly-baked scones to offer us on our arrival, and breakfast each morning was a delight. A traditional Northumbrian cooked breakfast is a hearty start to the day, with John's own-recipe black pudding a special feature, but there are lighter alternatives, including a delicious fresh fruit salad. John is also proud of his garden, and happy to point out the latest results of his and Pauline's hard work. He's very much in tune with local nature, too, and if you want to know about local wildlife, or when the latest lambs have been born at the farm next door, John's your man! Henshaw Barn is easily accessible from the main Newcastle to Carlisle road (traffic quietens down in the evening and the sounds are not intrusive), and the B&B is close to Once Brewed and Vindolanda. Henshaw is a lovely little hamlet too. Whether you are looking for a tourism base for Hadrian's Wall, or a comfortable idyll in which to relax and recharge, you can't do better than Henshaw Barn.

Henshaw Barn replied: B&B PERFECTION! Gosh! Praise indeed! And so very generous of you to write so warmly about us on your return home. Many thanks for your comprehensive and very detailed review, and for all your recommendations. We were both pleased, relieved, and delighted to learn that you were more than happy with your stay - particularly as you came to us by chance (on the kind recommendation of another B&B owner.) And it was good that we could be of help at the time. It was lovely to meet you - our thanks, and our very best wishes to you both. Pauline and John.
