WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

Cold outside warm and friendly inside.

John F, Wigan, United Kingdom
Welcomed with freshly made scones with homemade jam. We were totally relaxed in minutes and soaking up the cottage feeling. Things got better as we saw our room and enjoyed the views outside. John provides excellent food on every occasion. Pauline is an excellent host and makes sure her guests needs are met. We can't wait to return this Oct.

Henshaw Barn replied: At the start of the season (2017) very many thanks for your very welcome and very much appreciated recommendations - we are pleased that you had a happy, warm, and comfortable time with us (in a cold and wintery Northumberland!) It was a pleasure to meet you, and we look forward to seeing you again in October, should you be able to make that return visit........enjoy Egypt! Our very best wishes to you both, Pauline and John.

Rescued and revived by wonderful food and B&B

MrTALong, London, United Kingdom
I would highly recommend the Henshaw Barn and John and Pauline who kindly rescued us after a day of walking into a hard headwind on Hadrian's Wall. They revived us with some excellent coffee and homemade scones and jams, and we then discovered that John is an amazing chef. Thus we were revived by an amazing three course meal. They looked after us well, in their beautiful house, with a reviving hot shower and slept we well in a pretty little bedroom. Was so impressed I even bought some of his jam the next day. Highly recommended.

Henshaw Barn replied: It was so very good of you to write such a lovely review on your return home - thankyou for your kind words, and your recommendations...........we were beginning to worry about you - and we were so relieved at being able to collect you from the military road as dusk descended. And we are so pleased that you enjoyed your one night stay with us, and that you felt sufficiently rested and restored, and very ready for the next leg of your journey. It was good to meet you - and should you come this way again it would be a pleasure to see you both. We hope the house restoration is going well - and send you all our best wishes. Pauline and John.

Friendly Excellence

We stayed for two wonderful nights at this excellent B&B. The accommodation was itself unusually generous in that it included a dedicated sitting room for (max. two) guests, otherwise rooms were lavishly appointed. But the two outstanding features of our stay were: the excellent food, prepared not only with skill and care, but with love: and the friendly reception with sociable hosts, never too busy to chat, and always ready to go "the extra mile" without hesitation. Thank you, Pauline & John; we would love to come back. Au revoir.

Henshaw Barn replied: And we would love you to come back - as we very much enjoyed your company.....it was such a pleasure to share our home with you. Thank you for your very lovely, very generous and very positive review - such high praise is a joy to receive - it lifts our spirits and is very much appreciated......whilst your drawing attention to the most pleasureable aspects of your stay is of such benefit to us, and hopefully to our future guests. Our heartfelt thanks to you both! Sending you all our good wishes, Pauline and John.

What an amazing B&B! A beautiful home to Pauline and John who are so welcoming from the moment you arrive. We had booked to stay three nights but had such a great time that we stayed an extra night. We were welcomed with a cup of tea, home made scones and cake when we arrived. That was our taste of the pleasures to come. John is an exceptional chef, we were very glad we had booked the evening meals throughout our stay. Our room was beautiful, with an attention to details that revealed Pauline's exquisite taste. The bed was very comfortable and made up with beautiful bed linen. Our bathroom was next door and again, decorated beautifully, with skylight that made it a joy to soak in the bath and watch clouds pass by. Our breakfasts in the mornings were so filling that we didn't need to have any lunch, saving ourselves for the gourmet delights of the evening meal. Every meal was a joy as the table was always laid up so prettily with little touches like a small jug of fresh flowers from the garden. To have yoghurt at breakfast that was served in a beautiful crystal bowl, well, a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! Use of the small sitting room upstairs was great, we were able to chat to the other two guests who were staying. Again, a very comfortable and relaxing room with lots of interesting items to enjoy. Pauline and John were a mine of local information which we found very helpful, especially the shortcuts. We had such a wonderful time here we really didn't want to leave. We have booked for next year though, something to look forward to in 2017.

Henshaw Barn replied: What a glorious review - and so energising and uplifting as we come to the end of a very busy season. We are SO pleased that you found SO much to delight during your stay! Many thanks for writing in such detail - highlighting very specific pleasures.........and all wonderfully complimented with the addition of your lovely photos. Meeting you was such a pleasure - you were such kind, generous and enthusiastic guests, and we couldn't help but be saddened when you left.........HOWEVER we have the promise of your return visit in 2017.....which we already eagerly anticipate......but for now, as friends, we send you our warmest wishes. Pauline and John.

Second fantastic visit

patharris850, Suffolk, United Kingdom
Last year (2015) we visited this lovely B & B and experienced John & Pauline's special brand of hospitality and fantastic cuisine. We are delighted to be able to report that, on visiting again this year, the experience matched our memories and even surpassed expectations, with a few little extra refinements that John & Pauline have put in place. It really was just like dropping in to see friends - and how lovely to be given fresh scones in the their kitchen on arrival. We are definitely hoping to have a third visit in the not too distant future. Pat and Tony

Henshaw Barn replied: We are always particularly delighted when given the opportunity to welcome returning guests to our home - and it's lovely to hear, on this your second visit, that your memories held fast, and that somehow we exceeded all your expectations! It was a real pleasure to see you again - and to meet your friends - and so very easy to pick up where we left off, all of twelve months ago! Very special thanks to you both......for your continual support, and for all your kind and encouraging words......which we very much appreciate, value, and treasure. We hope we may see you again - and before too long - but in the meantime we send you our thanks, along with our very best wishes..........Pauline and John.
