Excellent Stay

Although it is a bit out of the way it makes up with excellent food and rooms well served with 'Free goodies'. Lovely spa bath!!!!!. Has a lovely warm feeling. Did not experience the observatory but is an added bonus if you do.

Friendly staff and a very pleasant stay

Spent 1 night here on a dinner/ bed and breakfast basis. The staff (nearly all Eastern Europeans) were superb- especially Denisa, who greeted us, checked us out- and in between ran the bar and numerous other jobs! Very eco-friendly hotel with lovely extras such as a bowl of fruit and home-made biscuits in our room. Dinner was excellent, with a full choice and no extras for steaks etc that you often find. The hotel has made an obvious effort to go somewhat upmarket- and it works! Thanks for a lovely stay!

Third visit and still wanting to return!

Susan A, Matlock
From arrival to departure, our three night stay, booked through Secret Escapes, was fabulous. This is my third stay here and, since my previous visit in September last year, the building work that was underway at that time, has been beautifully and sympathetically completed, to the point that anybody visiting for the first time would struggle to notice that there has been a recent extension. There’s a great mix of country charm and modern comfort here. Our twin bedded room was comfortable, if not luxurious, and was suitably appointed for an inn of its type. The beds were comfortable and we both slept well. There was a generous hospitality tray with a good selection of teas and ground coffee, as well as some really tasty cookies and fresh fruit. The only slight gripe is that, on the first evening, the pull cord that operated the bathroom fan broke whilst the fan was still running which meant that we could not turn off the fan. Despite mentioning this to staff, and despite housekeeping coming into our room each day when they presumably noticed that the fan was running, nothing was done until the last day. It wasn’t too much of an issue, although the constant noise of the running fan was annoying at night. The eight course taster menu, which was included in our deal, was delicious and, although the courses are relatively small, we felt incredibly full by the time we had finished. To others contemplating the taster menu, I would say that you should allow a minimum of two hours to comfortably get through all the courses and, importantly, make sure that you are hungry before you start, otherwise you risk being defeated! Breakfast was excellent and I was in marmalade heaven with the great choice. I’ve always felt that the food is probably Battlesteads’ greatest strength and it’s definitely one of the main reasons for my repeat visits. All in all, this is a lovely inn which is well situated for exploring gorgeous Northumberland. However, whilst the deals offered by Secret Escapes or Travelzoo offer fantastic value, especially when their offers include the tasting menu, I wouldn’t consider forking out on the rack rate which, I feel, is too high for what is essentially a coaching inn. If you can get a deal, though, it’s highly recommended as a great bolthole where you can enjoy some beautiful scenery, delicious food and generally chill out.

Peaceful location

Spent two nights at Battlesteads recently. Location of hotel is so peaceful, in a small village off the beaten track, yet not too far away from the places we wanted to see - Vindolanda, Hadrian's Wall and Kielder National Park. Hotel staff are lovely and welcoming. Our room was very comfortable and spacious. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious with lots of choices. We ate dinner in the restaurant on one night if our stay and enjoyed our meals. Only downside was the total absence of mobile phone signal in the village, although the hotel does provide free WiFi. We were offered the chance to stargaze in the on-site observatory but sadly nights were too cloudy to make it worthwhile at £20 a head. Would certainly recommend to those looking for some quiet r&r time.

Excellent Stay - Gorgeous Little Hotel with Brilliant Green Credentials

We stayed here on a two night deal booked through the Telegraph and it was so good I'd definitely stay again and pay full price and we've decided to buy some vouchers for friends as a wedding present. Very friendly staff, small but stylish and fully equipped room and superb food and drink....all in some of the most beautiful unspoilt countryside I have ever seen. It was idyllic. Had the 8 course tasting menu on the first night - the mini shepherds pie was to die for. All in all the food was outstanding both in the evening and at breakfast which was of a very high quality and plentiful. I loved this place and cannot wait to visit again. Most impressive was the obvious committment to the environment - eco friendly and beyond - think massive solar panel, veg and herbs from their own gardens, strong but sensible policies on waste, refillable toiletries in the rooms etc. Well done Battlesteads - my husband and I hope to see you all again very soon.
