Good place to stay

Philip C, Romsey, United Kingdom
We stayed here for three nights. The Lodge rooms are really good - large and with large bathrooms. There are nice gardens to sit in if the weather is good. Breakfasts were good and, although we were staying on a B&B basis, we ate in the hotel's restaurant each evening. The food was good, as was the service. The staff were friendly and efficient. We went to one of the hotel's astronomy evenings in its observatory. It was lead by an enthusiastic astronomer and we enjoyed the evening, although visibility was slightly spoiled by a nearly full moon.

Would agree with the many positive reviews on the site. We stayed in one of the fabulous lodges where all needs were catered for. They are indeed very well equipped. The dining room staff were friendly and attentive and the food good, but an occasional change in the evening menu would have been appreciated. Dining in the conservatory which overlooks the beautiful walled garden was a pleasant experience.

Exceptionally dog friendly!

NY777, Harrogate, United Kingdom
Booked one night in a superior lodge room last minute so got a good rate. The hotel itself and the garden are lovely and well looked after, but the room really was a cut above. The bedroom and bathroom was huge, very clean and had everything you could want - iron, bathrobes, slippers, WIFI, mini fridge, hairdryer, magazines, lots of wardrobe space and two HUGE skylights so you can see the stars. All very impressive but when it came to doggy friendliness they excelled. Left for us was a large blanket, towel and bath mat along with biscuits and a little pack of dry and wet food. Unlike many hotels they allow you to leave your dog in the room alone so although the bar is doggy friendly if you wanted to eat in the restaurant then you can leave them in the room. We didn't eat as the food wasn't to our taste - to be honest we just wanted burgers and chips after a long day walking! - but the bar was very nice for a pre dinner and post dinner drink. Would definitely stay again.

Effortless and enjoyable

Went for a run of the mill Saturday lunch and it became a very enjoyable and worthwhile visit. Seeing what else goes on here from the rooms, dark sky astronomy from their own facilities, and locally sourced food and drinks means that we will be returning often. Quality of the food was great and although not inexpensive, probably appropriate for the quality. The kids menu was much better than the usual seen in comparable establishments. Staff were efficient and friendly without being intrusive and looked after us well. A gem.

Our second stay at Battlesteads and we'll certainly be back. We had a lodge room on both occasions and couldn't fault them. Everything you need and more. We ate in the dining room on all 3 nights and couldn't fault any of the food, try the 8 course tasting menu. On our first visit we visited the hotels own dark sky observatory and thoroughly enjoyed spending a couple of hours learning about he heavens. All the staff without exception were friendly knowledgeable and helpful. Can't wait to return.
