Overview

Scotchcoulthard lies 4 miles North of Hadrian's Wall at it's highest point half way between Carlisle and Newcastle. We are located in the beautiful and unspoilt Northumbrian National Park and have 180 acres of upland farm on which our guests are free to roam. Scotchcoulthard has three stone cottages sleeping from 1 to 7 all with wood burning stoves. All the cottages have fabulous un-interrupted views. There is an indoor swimming pool open all day for your use. We welcome dogs with no restriction on number and at no extra charge. There is plenty of walking including many areas off lead.

Dissappointed

emmanew16, Brixworth, United Kingdom
We visited last week 2 adults and 2 young children. The cottage itself was lovely very roomy upstairs and lots of garden for the children to play. Sue and family were lovely and so were the farm dogs. The children cried when we left as they missed Sadie! We booked this cottage with the view of using the swimming pool and games room a lot, unfortunately the swimming pool was very unclean (not the usual wear and tear of tiles), there was grass floating in top of it and in the corners muck had collected beneath the surface, the games room hadn't been hoovered or cleaned for a while, the floor was filthy with dust and dirt and smelt very musty. Me and my husband have over 60 flea bites on us which we presume are from our bedroom, my husband suffers with bites and currently looks like he's caught chicken pox! I feel for the money we paid that it wouldn't have been much effort to try to be a bit more clean and also we found ourselves picking up the poo from the farm dogs so our children didn't step in it on a daily basis. This holiday is a perfect 'walkers retreat' but wouldn't recommend it to families.

Brilliant week at Scotchcoulthard

deepbluefoers, Yorkshire
Just back from a week at Scotchcoulthard - stayed in Hope Sike cottage with our three dogs. Susan and Andy are really lovely and made us so welcome. The cake she left for us on arrival was just delicious and we took slices out with us every day on our walks. The cottage is small but perfectly fine for two people -not to mention three retrievers! We were joined on some walks with Sadie and Heidi, two of their dogs and we couldn't stop laughing at Sadie's antics. Totally recommend this for a get away from it all holiday. Will definitely try to fit in another visit next year. Highly recommended if you like peace and quiet, stunning scenery and the warmest of welcomes. Just wish we'd packed swimming costumes to take advantage of the lovely indoor pool - next time!

Relaxing and Carefree

scott26b, Leeds, United Kingdom
We did worry that maybe we would be too isolated, so only booked 5 day stay. Next time it will be longer. Previous visitors had left lists of dog friendly pubs and restaurants locally, which was very handy. Lovely that our dog could wonder freely and that the farm dogs were welcoming to him. We could open the door and walk him for miles without getting in the car, sometimes the farm dogs came with us, which we enjoyed. We had wanted to see the Dark Sky, unfortunately we chose the longest day of the year, obviously we had not thought that one through! Next time we will go earlier or later in the year. There were 11 dogs on site when we visited, being dog lovers we welcomed them all into our cottage and left the door open. Something that you may want to consider if you are not that much of a dog lover. Only thing we were short of was a baby gate to keep our dog out of the bedroom and had to use dining chairs. The cottage otherwise was very well equipped the very clean. Could recommend Scotch Coulthard to anyone.

Scotchcoulthard Holiday Cottages replied: We are glad you enjoyed your visit and hope if you come back you will have more luck with the skies! We do have a baby gate for dogs so let us know next time you are here if you would like it. I never though to mention it in the welcome pack so will now include it! Andy and Susan
