Fab stay at chillingham

scottishmandy, Ayr
Had an amazing stay in the grey apartment at chillingham castle. Arrived on Friday and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our apartment was amazing full of old furniture and worn ornaments that added to the atmosphere of the rooms. My friend referred to the castle as a cabinet of curiosities. If you like immaculate, modern and minimal accommodation then you prob won't like the apartments. We however loved it. It's an old castle so expect the odd cobweb and bit of dust. Again it all adds to the atmosphere. We went to wooler co-op to get supply's as the kitchen had everything we needed to make dinner. When we got back we had a wee walk around the grounds and met sir Humphry Wakefield who was also extremely friendly and welcoming. We discovered that all the cupboards opened easily by walking past them as they didn't close properly. Especially the cupboard in the four poster room. So not paranormal. We watched a few horror movies on the flat screen tv in living room before bed. Then had about 2 hrs sleep. Kept waking up to footsteps, creaking noises and someone moving in the twin room. We slept in the four poster room. What freaked me out the most was the banging from the bathroom. It sounded like someone had taken all my toiletries and thrown them in the bath but next day nothing was there. When I knocked on the bath it was the same noise I heard. The next morning we headed to Alnwick and went to the castle there and had lunch before coming back and exploring chillingham before it closed. I then had an afternoon nap. The castle has an amazing collection of different artefacts. On the Saturday we went on the ghost tour, which I really recommend. Not only do you hear some great ghost stories and personal encounters from the guide you get further incite into the history of chillingham. The cafe and the hanging trees were by far the creepiest. Caught eerie mist on camera in the cafe. Saturday night caught an eerie mist in the apartment to. Night two there wasn't as much activity which was good as I needed sleep. Woke up to a few noises but nothing as loud as the night before. Left Sunday morning and already planning my next trip back. Hoping to be a bit braver next time though and switch the lights off at night. So much more to explore in Northumberland as well. I'll Definitely be making another booking soon 😊

What a delight!!

If you are a little tired of the "perfection" of National Trust houses do not miss Chillingham. It is a joy. It is eccentric, chaotic in places and in other places falling to pieces. I went round with a smile on my face. The volunteer guides are friendly and knowledgeable...especially Alan who used to be head gardener. Lots of photos of the family and nick-jacks collected by past owners....some quite bizarre. LOVED IT!

Pleasantly surprised

JulyBabe47, Norwich, United Kingdom
In a delightful part of Northumberland, this unusual Castle with a fascinating story to tell, was a lovely surprise. Husband partially disabled but the staff couldn't have been more helpful and where possible, helped him all they could . Sadly neither of us saw the ghost, for which Chillingham is well known but a fellow traveller did feel the energy in the Chapel. Well worth a visit.

Save your mone

I took my husband here as a birthday treat. More fool me!! The Guard room is shabby beyond words. I have seen better furniture at our local tip! It's cold and damp. The kitchen is a total joke. Rusty and dirty! In the tattered welcome book they respectfully ask that you leave the place as you find it expecting you to clean out your own fire after your stay. Given that this is the only source of heat in the building I found this particularly annoying. I can not comment on the if the shower works or not as it was so cold and looked so antiquated I didn't bother trying to use it! Had I not paid upfront I would certainly have done an about turn and headed straight to ANYWERE ELSE!

Charming Chillingham

Margaretlchambers, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
We have just spent a great afternoon at Chillingham Castle, it was so interesting and not like your usual tour round a stately home but you have to remember Sir Humphrey bought the Castle when it was a total ruin. To read about the stories of the family, restoration work so far and all the unusual items ( even though not authentic to the history of the castle) kept us well entertained. The grounds around the castle gave us an enjoyable walk down to the lake where we bumped into Sir Humphrey and his wife and they stopped and engaged in pleasant conversation. If you want to see something a bit different then visit Chillingham Castle I forgot to add that all the staff that we met were friendly and informative.
