Lodges are very outdated, showers terrbile and beds very uncomfortable.

Steve_muzzy,
The Calvert trust does some excellent work for disabled people and can offer an environment and care facilities which seem to be great. They seem to offer a wide range of activities which cater for all. We saw an advert on the web for the site and we booked a lodge for the October break. Don't get me wrong they are huge and the location is stunning, however the lodge we stayed in was lacking in so many ways and the facilities in the main complex (bar the excellent sensory room) are just too basic (or in the case of the advertised pool table and table tennis tables just not there...) You are out walking/cycling and spending time in the countryside and as its the UK you are likely to get cold and wet, so you really want good showers and a comfy bed to sleep off your endeavours. The lodge had no water pressure at all, so the showers were absolutely terrible. They are in wet rooms which smell musty and just not clean enough.(some of the equipment in the bathroom was also very rusty) The shower has no power or flow and washing long hair proved a real task. We booked the pool one day just to have a half decent shower. The beds were really poor, hard mattresses, squeaky and all the linen was as cheap as possible (curtains are virtually transparent) so a good nights sleep is hard to get. The carpeted flooring has no underlay so rock solid, loud and the carpet was almost threadbare. These things could be changes so easily, a power shower pump, new linen and a couple of mattresses wouldn't break the bank along with a refresh to the lodge decoration. Oh and lamps, none in the rooms so it was either the bright main light or darkness.. The lodges really see to have had no investment, which is frustrating as they are huge, in a great spot and if they upped the quality you would happily pay a good bit more to stay there. The holiday was cheap but unfortunately really felt cheap. On a good note the staff were generally all very good. The food available in the dining area (think School Dinners from the 80s) whilst basic was tasty and cheap and decent sized portions.

Perfect place to log off and relax

Stella P,
For everyone who wants to get off the everyday stress, this is your place. The area around is spectacular, with nature walks and amazing activities to do, like zip wire, sailing, archery, laser shooting and abseiling. The staff were excellent, very welcoming, friendly and helpful in assisting and guiding us with the activities. We had the chance to eat in the restaurant as well, which has AMAZING food. Would love to visit again and do the rest of the activities.

Took my Nephew for an Adventure

charlotte g, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
My husband and I were baby sitting my nephew from the London area, so decided to take him on an adventure day. Booking was easy, and we arrived on Thursday morning, for a day packed full. we were booked on to King swing, archery, high ropes and the climbing wall. Whilst I love the King Swing it was not my nephews favourite and even the bad jokes from the instructors could not lightening his fear. However the high ropes in the afternoon AMAZING! I never thought he would do it, but he did and with great help from Dave our instructor my 8 year nephew loved every minute and as soon as he hit the ground, asked to go again. This is a great place for families and for adventurous little ones that need to push their boundaries. my nephew has already planned his next trip and we can't wait!

Calvert Trust Kielder replied: Charlotte, Thank you for your comments. We are glad to hear you all enjoyed your adventure day and that your nephew overcame his fears and completed the High-ropes course. He is certainly braver than me! If you have any pictures of your experience we would love it if you could share them with us by sending them over to guestservices@calvert-kielder.com or by sharing your experience on our facebook page. Nice to hear he has his next visit planned and we look forward to welcoming you all again. Regards, Lynsey

Drop-in kayaking and canoeing session

kdeltcheva, London, United Kingdom
We only did the canoeing/kayaking session and had a great time. The instructors were very welcoming and friendly but the only way we had found out about this session was by accident. Even though my partner is disabled, we still had not been able to find clear information on the website to suggest that accommodation or activities were available to other than people with specific needs.

Can't wait to go back

HannahUnderwood2, Prudhoe, United Kingdom
What a beautiful and calm place. Our lodge The Straker was immaculate and so well thought out. Our daughter loved the bubbly, moodlit bathroom and we loved the wood fired hot tub. A real treat for all the family and a great place to spend time with our friends. We were lucky enough to experience both the sensory room and the hydropool in the main centre, the babies were totally mesmerised. We can't wait to go back.

Calvert Trust Kielder replied: Dear Hannah, Thank you for your comments. I am glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you cant wait to come back!! We look forward to having you back. Best wishes and hope to see you all again soon. Lynsey
