Overview

The Inn has 18 ensuite bedrooms and is set amongst some of the most breath taking scenery in England, standing in the shadows of Steel Rigg, without doubt one of the most dramatic parts of Hadrian's Wall.   We serve locally sourced, home cooked food all day which can be enjoyed in our bar, "Twice Brewed", our restaurant, "Sycamore Gap" or in our beer garden. Please see our website for further details and menus.  Andy and Susan Smith and the Team look forward to welcoming you to the Inn.

Large parties, functions and coach parties all welcome - if you would like any further details please do not hesitate to get in touch, boking not always essential.

PRIVATE FUNCTIONS

We have nearly completed the renovation of our Private Function Room which will be available to hire from June 2016 for weddings, Christenings, Birthdays, conferences and much, much more.  Please contact us for further information.

Poor value would be ok for £20-30 less per night

John R, Preston, United Kingdom
Small ensuite room which was incredibly hot. Outside temperature around 10C. Radiator in room off. Window open and room temperature still 20C which is too hot for me to sleep comfortably. Plus having window open meant sounds car park made it impossible to sleep until the bar closed and all the non residents had left. Poor interior sound proofing meant I could hear other guests moving around, flushing toilet cleaning teeth etc. WiFi very flaky (I gave up and used my data which was weak but stable On a more positive note dinner was excellent although it would have been nice to have more than one vegetarian starter and one vegetarian main course. I have travelled west to east on Hadrian's wall. This is the fourth stop. It is 67% more than the next most expensive yet easily the worst of the four.

Kind of old world

seanmckerrell, Glasgow, United Kingdom
As ever my stops are by necessity rather than choice. The twice brewed is a place we passed during a recent family expedition to the Hadrian wall. Looks ok from outside.... I thought it might be a traditional old pub / inn.... Turns out it probably was an old inn, but it has been "hollowed out" to be a tourist / premier inn / beige / tartan something. The rooms are quite nice, clean. The food is (if I had been walking all day on the wall.... "a little dainty" Good flavour, but after a long walk I want high piles of hot or warm "something" / calories I like the anchor inn hotel locally, but not on the wall.

Avoid bank holidays - Willing but Overwrought staff

HB2981, Cullercoats, United Kingdom
Since our last stay (a few years ago) this lovely old, remote pub with rooms has been revamped. We paid in advance for an overnight stay and an early evening meal on Easter Saturday as we were attending an event at nearby NT Housesteads. We arrived mid afternoon and were warmly greeted by a number of obviously overwrought staff. The newly installed digital lock on our door did not work. So after three tired but helpful members of staff tried unsuccessfully to get the door to lock (in the process aggravating guests in adjoining room by forcefully slamming our door shut several times) we were offered an alternative room. This room was inferior to the one booked as there was no bath or any clothes storage facilities. By this time our restaurant booking was due so we just quickly moved rooms and went to eat. We were told there was no food left but they could accommodate us in the restaurant 45 minutes after our booking. We pointed out we had booked our meal to give us time to get to our event at Housesteads and a delay of 45 minutes would make us late and they would have stopped serving food by the time we got back. There was some suggestion that he thought the booking was for 15 not 2 (?!?). The deputy manager offered us a table as long as we selected from the lunch rather than dinner menu (some other bookings were told to come back in an hour) and we were served a nice, freshly cooked meal. On our return we discovered, in our rush to change rooms, some items had been left in our original room. The lock had been reset and the room re-allocated. The tired deputy manager said he would attempt to retrieve our possessions and would also compensate us for the inferior room. Neither of these occurred but next morning the receptionist contacted her boss who agreed a slight discount. I preferred the old pub with old-fashioned keys, less plush decor and fewer customers.
