Northumberland adds to trophy cabinet with BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2017

Once again, Northumberland has proved a popular spot with the general public, after they crowned the Northumberland Coast ‘Holiday Destination of the Year’ and Embleton Bay as ‘Beach of the Year’ in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2017.

Celebrating the best of Britain’s countryside, from favourite heritage attractions and holiday destinations, to the best nature reserves and rural pubs, the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards are held in high regard.

Experts drew up a shortlist of nominees for each of the twelve categories, before taking the vote to the public in January 2017.

BBC Countryfile presenter Anita Rani selected the Northumberland Coast as one of her five nominees for ‘Holiday Destination of the Year’:
“The beauty of Northumberland’s coast just blows me away. It’s a hidden treasure of Great Britain. The shoreline is incredibly dramatic, with wide expanses of sand interspersed by majestic castles, such as Dunstanburgh, Lindisfarne and Bamburgh, giving it a beautifully mysterious quality. There are pretty harbour villages too, such as Seahouses and Craster, and the rum-producing market town of Alnwick. I can’t sing the praises of this glorious stretch of coast enough.”

BBC Coast presenter Hermione Cockburn nominated Embleton Bay in her category, ‘Beach of the Year’:
“This immense sandy beach, dominated by the majestic remains of Dunstanburgh Castle at its southern tip, is perfect for family days out or long walks. The Ship Inn in Low Newton is great spot for a pint and there’s good birdwatching at Newton Pool Nature Reserve behind the dunes.”

The Farne Islands were also runner-up in the Nature Reserve of the Year category.

With such a strong seaside offering, it is little wonder the Northumberland coast is a popular tourist hotspot year after year.
