The Queens Head in Rothbury is a traditional old fashioned Inn in the heart of the beautiful Coquet Valley. A landmark in the village since 1780 the pub is centrally placed and within 1 minutes' walk of the river.

On the edge of the National Park and only 30 minutes drive from the Heritage coast, making us an ideal base from which to explore the natural beauty of North Northumberland and the Borders, or if shopping is your pleasure Newcastle is only 40 minutes drive away.

Outdoor pursuits in the area include  fishing, golfing, shooting, walking, climbing and cycling.  The Coquet is justly famous for its trout and salmon fishing, and other rivers are within easy reach. Rothbury has its own 18-hole golf course and there are many more in the area.

We can arrange discounted golfing and fly fishing tuition and we have cycle storage and drying  space for muddy boots. We can also arrange for cycle hire, delivered to the door and hire of all terrain buggies for children.

The hotel has 7 en suite bedrooms (including family rooms), 2 dining rooms, lounge bar and games room. There is a pleasant outdoor seating area and free parking in a private car park.

Children are always welcome and high chairs are provided, cots are available by prior arrangement.

We have a reputation for excellent food and offer a bar menu as well a full a la Carte menu. The Sunday carvery is especially popular and good value for money and if you eat nothing else you must try the bread and butter pudding, or the hot sticky ginger pudding, or the chocolate sponge pudding ...........try them all.

An overnight stay

AlanFSEly, Ely
Visiting Northumberland for the first time in a while. This is a nice if a little disorganised hotel. We stayed 1 night and ate there, they were able to offer me gluten free options for dinner and had gluten free toast for breakfast. The. Room was comfortable and had a good sized bath room with bath. Would stay again.

The Queens Head replied: Hello Alan, So sorry about the disappearing key, it was like the keystone cops trying to find it hahaha. Pleased you enjoyed your stay, please do visit us again we have great deals on in off season and I promise we wont lose the key to your room next time. Teresa

Well stocked bar- friendly old style pub

Sarah B,
Spent the afternoon on the sofa in the bar. Then came back for our evening meal. Very busy even for a Thursday evening and staff were run off their feet but great friendly service and our meal was polished off. Chips homemade, kids fish fingers -homemade. Cannot fault the food and service.

The Queens Head replied: Hi Sarah, Thanks for your review, I love the old sofa in the bar also, when I get the chance to sit for five minutes and have a coffee, I nearly drop off. So happy that you enjoyed your meal with us, it has been very busy recently but we have great staff and its a shame some people don't appreciate everything is homemade. Thanks again. Teresa

Exceptionally disappointing

CyclistSydney, Sydney
Had to walk past the seemingly disorganised clutter of bags of clean and dirty hotel laundry and stacked ironing boards and other "stuff" in the corridor before getting to our room (first impressions ..). Missing fire extinguisher. Thumping band on Saturday and Sunday night. Only one bedroom window just opened. Our room was clean enough and bathroom recently renovated, but the overall impression was uninviting. Dinner and breakfasts were quite acceptable but nothing to get excited about. And, there were several signs asking guests to leave a positive review on TripAdvisor. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to friends.

The Queens Head replied: Hello, Oh dear, I must apologise re the laundry, we have deliveries and collections on two days a week and the delivery driver insists the bags are left out for him to collect quickly, I will look into finding somewhere else to put them. As it was a bank holiday weekend we put on some very good entertainment until just after 11pm I am sorry if you did not enjoy it. The fire extinguisher is there... !! Trip advisor are omnipresent and we are encouraged to advertise them, but I agree it's a bit pushy for British tastes. I am sorry you feel you cannot recommend us and I will be taking up all of the issues you raised. Teresa

evening family birthday meal

paulsN7180SF, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
We had a wonderful birthday family meal for my sister. place was busy but the two young staff did really well. they worked really hard to accommodate everyone in restaurant, and they did...well done highlight was the chefs chicken in blue cheese,,yeee was fab chef, thankyou. will be coming for more of that..the chicken and haggis was well appreciated by my daughter and she's a fussy madam, so well done for keeping her happy. the soul music in the background was really nice and found myself moving to the groove with Aretha between courses..really nice atmosphere..well done QH..

The Queens Head replied: Thank you Paul for your lovely review, the girls in the restaurant are good, we work them hard lol. So glad you had such a lovely time and I hope you can come back to visit us to try something else (my favourite is the Hunter Sauce) thanks again. Teresa

Lunchtime Meal

Gareth S, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom
We sat in the bar area for a lunchtime meal. The décor is dated and not to our taste - best described as traditional - and my beer choice was not to my liking either. Not a good start! However, the food was spot on and you can be proud of a lunchtime menu that delivers hearty food to passing trade - which is what we were.

The Queens Head replied: Hello Gareth, thanks for your review. Great to hear you enjoyed the food, next time ask to sample a beer if you have not had it before, we are always happy to make sure you get the right one. Teresa
