Overview

The Queens Head in Rothbury is a traditional old fashioned Inn in the heart of the beautiful Coquet Valley. A landmark in the village since 1780 the pub is centrally placed and within 1 minutes' walk of the river.

On the edge of the National Park and only 30 minutes drive from the Heritage coast, making us an ideal base from which to explore the natural beauty of North Northumberland and the Borders, or if shopping is your pleasure Newcastle is only 40 minutes drive away.

Outdoor pursuits in the area include  fishing, golfing, shooting, walking, climbing and cycling.  The Coquet is justly famous for its trout and salmon fishing, and other rivers are within easy reach. Rothbury has its own 18-hole golf course and there are many more in the area.

We can arrange discounted golfing and fly fishing tuition and we have cycle storage and drying  space for muddy boots. We can also arrange for cycle hire, delivered to the door and hire of all terrain buggies for children.

The hotel has 7 en suite bedrooms (including family rooms), 2 dining rooms, lounge bar and games room. There is a pleasant outdoor seating area and free parking in a private car park.

Children are always welcome and high chairs are provided, cots are available by prior arrangement.

We have a reputation for excellent food and offer a bar menu as well a full a la Carte menu. The Sunday carvery is especially popular and good value for money and if you eat nothing else you must try the bread and butter pudding, or the hot sticky ginger pudding, or the chocolate sponge pudding ...........try them all.

Bed and breakfast Twin or Double Room Rate from £60 to £80 per night.

Single occupancy from £40 per night in a twin and £50 in a double.

Family Rooms supplement £20 per extra person per night

Great food and good beer

We ate in the Queens Head twice during our holiday in Rothbury and the meals on both occasions were great. The bar area was very clean and inviting, the real ale was very good and the staff were very friendly. We will be looking to book a short break here next year

Interesting! Clean and comfortable with a good chef.

This is an old hotel. If you want shiny glass and stainless steel this is not for you. If you don't mind creaky floorboards with narrow stairs, dodgy heating, plumbing that sounds like concorde taking off, single glazing, doors that don't close properly and a whole host of oddball things in a very tired setting then you will like this hotel. Having said all of that, we had a very enjoyable 4 night stay here. The important things like a clean and comfy bed, clean toilet/shower and a very excellent breakfast were all there. In particular the breakfasts were really rather good and the coffee the best I have had in years even in some very expensive places. We would stay in The Queens Head again, especially at the room rates we paid this time.

Close but no cigar

Booked 3 nights Fri-Mon, room was very comfortable, bathroom very spacious. Heating was too warm, we had the window open at least half way the whole time we were there (room had condensation issues as well). Breakfast was good - husband enjoyed the sausage (he's a bit fussy with bangers). We ate in the restaurant two nights running. The first night we went up the bar to get a drink as we were a bit early, the barman ran off to get the waitress from the restaurant, we were shown to our table, given menus and left alone - all without a drink or being asked if we wanted a drink. Not a good impression at this stage. I had veg sausage & mash, which was OK - mash was a bit lumpy (get a ricer!). Husband had fish & chips, he said the batter was very greasy. However, we both had the Baileys Cheesecake for dessert and agreed that it was heavenly. The second night husband had the chicken & haggis, which he enjoyed very much. I had something veggie off the specials board that I can't remember. However, we both had the Baileys Cheesecake again just to see if it was as good as the first night - and it was!! The bar is a warm, welcoming space with an eclectic mix of tables & chairs. An excellent selection of ales - and some very nice alcoholic 'pop'. I really enjoyed the Dandelion & Burdock. Hotel was in a great location for getting out and about in Northumberland - we went Cragside (just up the road and well worth a day visit), Alnwick castle & gardens and Kielder Water & Forest.

Good but ultimately let themselves down

The Queens Head is a good hotel for a short stop over in Rothbury. Our room was on the top floor which was quite a climb, but this was made clear before booking and was not a problem given the age of the building. The room itself was bright and airy and very clean. The bathroom facilities were modern and also very clean. There was a comprehensive tea tray but one thing missing was any information about the WiFi which would have been useful. We ate in the restaurant on the evening of our stay and the food was delicious. Fresh and well prepared with very good service although they were very busy. The thing that took the gloss off our visit and resulted in only giving a rating of 3 was the service at breakfast. Instead of being welcomed with a smile or even with "good morning" the waitress in sole charge of the breakfast room simply gestured towards the tables and left us to get on with it. When she came to take our orders I asked if it would be possible to have the full breakfast but without beans or tomatoes, replaced by an extra fried egg. I felt this to be entirely reasonable. This was met with a loud sigh and a scowl. It made me feel as if I was being a bother - not a pleasant feeling. My poor husband then ordered scrambled eggs and asked if they could be made without butter which was met with an even more audible sigh. I don't regard us as being awkward customers and felt that these were pretty minor requests. The food when it arrived was fine but the plates were put down very heavily and we were warned that they were very hot after we had touched them. There is a sign in the breakfast room saying "Good morning - we hope you have a lovely day". Perhaps this should be pointed out to the staff. It was a shame, because apart from our experience with breakfast we would recommend The Queens Head.

The Queens Head replied: Hello, I am making an assumption here but I believe you stayed on Saturday 30th so had breakfast on the Sunday 1st October. I am so sorry that you were met with a grumpy waitress, I can assure you this is not the norm and I am very surprised because usually she is really jolly, but I will definitely have a word with her. As to the WIFI, I have removed all the information to be updated but will put a card in the room with the details. Thank you for saying you would recommend the Queens Head and apologies again, its a shame the last thing you remember is such a negative. Teresa

Food terrible.

jaline2016, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Called in at lunchtime and ordered two cheese melts which were suppose to contain Halloumi cheese and other vegetables. Unfortunately it did not contain any Halloumi and the bread was rock hard. It had obviously been warmed up in the microwave and over cooked. We did complain and was told that type of bread is hard but the Chef would be informed. If they cannot cook a simple sandwich we dread to think what their other are meals like. It was a complete waste of money.

The Queens Head replied: Hello, The ciabatta is warmed in the oven and then put under the grill with the roasted vegetables and cheese, we did not have any Halloumi and you should have been informed of this when you ordered. I am very sorry you were so disappointed and I will certainly be taking this incident up with the kitchen. Would you please let me know what day it was you visited. thank you Teresa
