Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Almost perfect

Bagster, Shropshire, England
We had one problem with this pub, and everything else was fine. So let me leave the problem till last. The place is clean, well looked after and well presented. It's family-run, and the welcome is uniformly good. They have a bit of a monopoly of this level of accommodation near Kielder Water, so you couldn't blame them if they let standards slip, and that hasn't happened. The full English breakfast is really good -- a cut above. We enjoyed dinner and there was a nice variety. It's pub food, not Michelin starred, and it's priced as pub food. You know what you're getting, and it's better than a lot of pubs you may have eaten in. Good draft beers. The problem? Well, we were in Room 5 and I can't be certain that it's the same in all rooms, but the bed was too narrow, and that had a negative effect on sleep. I wouldn't let it put me off another visit, though.

Couldn't fault this place for location, food, drinks or accommodation. Large selection of drinks, food was delicious and everything you need in the rooms, including wifi! Fantastic inn with lovely staff, we had a really enjoyable stay and will definitely be back.

Delicious food, friendly service

GeraldineF2087, Wakefield, United Kingdom
Enjoyed by all, the service was friendly, efficient, we were not rushed. We hadn't booked and most of the tables were booked but they squeezed in 2 adults and 2 tired children. The food was extremely nice, and reasonably priced. Would heartily recommend.

The most tender piece of lamb

jec1492, London, United Kingdom
Stopped off for a pub lunch today and was incredibly impressed by the lunch I was served. I haven't had a piece of lamb cooked so well in a long time, and the rosemary and red current jus was perfect. I was also pleased to see a good range of ales on offer, particularly from the local Wylam brewery.
