Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Could be better.

mrba2015, Northampton, United Kingdom
We ate here with friends and yes we had a very nice meal. The pub is very atmosphere, a lovely country pub. Prices are high but the food is good so it's worth it. The only downside is the staff they were all pleasant but young, very inexperienced and just not too bothered. Management need to up their game with staff training.

Just stayed with my husband for a special birthday short break in this wonderfully charming pub ideally situated for the beautiful keilder water,Our room was spotlessly clean with a fabulously comfy bed,The food was to die for and the breakfast was the best we have ever tasted,As you can tell we really enjoyed our stay but what makes The Pheasant special are the owners Angela and Robin and their staff it was like we had been made welcome into their own home , Thanks to Robin,Angela,Karen and all staff for making my birthday so special can't wait to make a return visit. Nice welcoming country inn!

jaj0409, Durham, United Kingdom
This is a very popular hotel destination which has a knock on for casual visitors. Quite understandably the restaurant caters for its residents, hence with a few outside bookings there appears to be a lot of pressure on the kitchen and booking is advisable. Certainly the pub, tastefully restored is the stand out in this tourist area which is generally lacking too many places to eat. It has draught Wylam Brewery beers and a fine selection of whiskies and wines for those wanting liquid refreshment. For a more substantial evening the menu concentrates on local dishes - steak, salmon, slow cooked lamb ( the most popular item) and home made pies, with a sprinkling of vegetarian/vegan alternatives. My slow cooked steak and kidney pie was very good, meltingly so, but rather let down by the medley of vegetables which were a bit unimaginative imo. The baked salmon was also good. The prices are on the high side and, as such, more attention to the accompaniments would have paid dividends. Overall the atmosphere is friendly and the service attentive which made for a very pleasant evening.

Charming Inn that has been sympathetically and tastefully refurbished

sue682015, Northallerton, United Kingdom
This is the nicest small hotel that we have stayed in for a very long time. The owners are charming and make you feel most welcome. Our room had been refurbished with a most comfortable bed. The bathroom was simple but everything worked well, was very clean and the towels were huge and very soft! We only stayed overnight as we were visiting the Kielder observatory. Again the owner gave us good advice for our journey there and made sure that we had enough time to eat before we had to leave. We chose just a simple meal as we were eating earlier than usual but it was well cooked and very tasty. Can't wait to book again!!

Great stay

A return visit to this pub after a couple of years and it was as great now as then. The room was clean, cosy and welcoming with a bed you could get lost in! The food was fantastic as before and plenty of choice, something to suit everyone. The staff are attentive without being intrusive and it was lovely to see Annabelle again, who was more than helpful behind the bar. We will be back to this peaceful country retreat, thanks to all.
