Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Perfect

Aunty_Nita, Washington, United Kingdom
I stayed here last night with some work colleagues after spending the day at the Calvert Trust in the wind and rain. The pub is lovely, open fires, lovely atmosphere, delicious food and friendly helpful staff.. We were in the family room which was warm and comfortable. I'll definitely come back here, hopefully very soon.

Good location for Kielder Water. The room was clean, warm and comfortable, the bathroom had a good shower with plenty of hot water. All the staff were polite and attentive. There was a good choice at breakfast and the evening meals were really nice.

Nice and tasty

Just went for evening meal before going to Kielder Observatory, food was homely and hot all that you could ask for. Very near to the Observatory and to Kielder Water, even on the dark night the road was more than adequate.

Top quality food and ale

PCriz,
I would definitely recommend booking if you wish to eat early as it's very popular. Unfortunately we couldn't get phone reception to call and book but managed to still get a table. The food: we both had soup of the day, an excellent spicy parsnip. Main course for me was steak and kidney pie which was very nice and the veg was well cooked. My partner had the duck which she really enjoyed. I thought it was on the small side but she disagreed! Neither of us had room for pudding so the portions must have been fine. I had a pint of my favourite Tim Taylor's landlord which was ok but better in the Yorkshire Dales...sorry!!

The Pheasant Inn replied: Many thanks for taking time to leave us a review. Delighted to hear you enjoyed your meal and your pint of Taylors, apparently it doesn't travel well but its still a great pint even in Northumberland . :)
