Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

A very welcoming place

mynameisalwaystaken, London
Stayed here recently whilst visiting the observatory and the welcome was great. The rooms were well appointed, and more importantly, extremely well maintained and cleaned. The pub is lovely.. a wonderful fire, enjoyable ales, great breakfast and equally enjoyable dinner. We were welcome right from the start both by the staff and fellow guests and had a lovely long weekend here. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is that I found the soundproofing between floors/walls in the rooms to be a bit lacking..I don't want to hear other people.. but that is very much a personal thing for me.

Just right

Samol, Durham UK
Over the years we have enjoyed many meals at The Pheasant, even going back to the days when Walter ran the place - it is a convenient and convivial place to meet our son who lives in Edinburgh. This is the epitome of a country pub - pleasant lounge bars, a roaring fire in winter, gleaming brasses, a great range of beers and wines, and staff who know the real meaning of care and consideration. And then there's the food! Neither flashy nor bland, portions neither massive nor miniscule. In fact, just right! Our favourites are the lamb and the cider-baked gammon (sadly missing from the menu on the last few visits) followed by brioche/marmelade pudding and apple/orange crumble, all washed down with a pint of Timmy's and a glass of wine. Delicious! But last week we decided to try one of the 8 bedrooms for an overnight. Our room was not the biggest we have experienced on our travels, but everything was clean and in good order, with an extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom also was not huge and had just a shower cubicle (which we prefer) but again was in excellent order. Of course, an overnight stay meant we could take dinner in the cosy dining room, and enjoy more delicious food. There is a lot to do in this area - views, walking, watersports, and now the observatory. Right in the middle is The Pheasant - just right!

a pleasant din(ner) at the pheasant inn

bigtreez43, margate kent
Just came came back from a 5 night break in falstone and visited the pheasant Inn on 2 occasions for dinner and 1 occasion to partake of their range of malt whiskies. The food was fabulous, wanted to try 2 different meals but the Northumberland lamb was sooo good, I ordered it on the two occasions! Soup starters were very tasty and the desserts were sublime. It is a privately owned establishment which was so obvious from the fabulously cozy interior to the drinks and food offered. I made my way through several malt whiskies and hubby had a few gins. Will definitely revisit when we return to Northumberland, can thoroughly recommend

Superb in every way

teresawestsussex, Worthing, United Kingdom
We stayed here for 2 nights in early December when visiting the Kielder Observatory. Our room was a converted cowshed, beautifully furnished, immaculately clean and with a bed more comfortable than ours at home. The large bathroom had a shower with plenty of hot water. We had dinner at the inn on both nights, the food was perfectly cooked and very good quality with a good choice of dishes. Breakfast was fabulous too, everything freshly cooked - again, lots of choice - and lashings of toast and marmalade. I really cannot fault this hotel. Everyone made us feel welcome and that our custom was valued. 10 out of 10 in all respects. Shame they're not closer to West Sussex!

The Pheasant Inn replied: Thank you for taking time to leave us your review. Its great to get such positive feedback and gives the whole team a great boost. The Kielder Observatory is drawing people from far and wide and being so close we can help to make it a memorable experience. We are a long way from West Sussex but hope we might see you again someday.
