Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Charming old inn

Jimmee262, Sunderland, United Kingdom
Winter perhaps not a good time to visit... the charming building and lovely setting were complemented by a traditional bar and loung/dining room. The rooms were in converted outbuildings, nicely done out, small but spacious enough with en suite,tv and tea making facilities. My comment about the winter months was because of the (probably untrained) service, which was poor and when we returned after an evening out at 10pm, the bar was closed; however the food was fresh and well cooked - if you got it! After waiting forty minutes my husband decided not to bother with the second half of his breakfast.

Lovely, warm and welcoming place with loads of character

silverspanner64, County Durham, United Kingdom
Although we have visited this gorgeous country pub on quite a few occasions for Sunday lunch which may I say is gorgeous home cooked food sourced locally. The flavour of the beef and real gravy which I usually plump for is amazing. The lamb is also fab. My hubby tends to be a bit of a pie man and loves the game pie. We have kept promising ourselves to get up there for an evening meal but it's a little over an hour from where we live. However on this occasion my lovely lil sister bought us tickets for an aurora night up at the observatory so good excuse to book an over night stay AND do evening meal . Lucky us. Was a lovely night.! Hit on beautiful clear night for stargazing .Our room was really cosy and warm and bed super comfy. Toilet and shower really spot less. Plenty of choice tea ,coffee, chocolate etc. Tv and radio plus wi fi in room and pub. Thank you to all for an enjoyable stay 😊👌🍷

Lovely place, good food and staff

horrgakx, UK North West
My wife and I stayed here for a night, used the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. It's about 15 minutes to the Observatory door-to-door and the surrounding countryside and roads are smashing. The room was fairly small but very comfortable and quiet. The bar & restaurant is very comfortable - it was January and the real fire was stoked making it cosy. Good was great; I had king prawn starter and pheasant breast for main. All was very well cooked and presented with delicately done vegetables, all served on hot plates. The staff were helpful and friendly. All in all a great experience, it will be great to come back in the summer when it's warmer and the skies are less grey.

Lovely food, beautiful country pub

jbreen, Newcastle
Went for a meal whilst staying in the nearby falstone barns in falstone.. the food was great, staff were friendly and helpful and the decor was just as expected, fire burning, loads of interesting trinkets on the walls, a nice warming atmosphere. Definitely worth a stop if you're up near Kielder!
