Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Perfect place to stay and unwind

overthetyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Whilst exploring the Kielder area in the Northumberland National Park we had the pleasure of an overnight stay at this Inn. Set back off the road it is very tranquil. The welcoming greeting from the staff was warm, our room had lovely views out over the countryside, it was a cheerfully room with a more than adequate shower/bathroom. Came with plenty of hot drinking facilities and a tv. Comfy bed and both slept soundly. Evening meal was truly gorgeous and an excellent choice available using some locally sourced ingredients. Good beers, wine and spirits so you will not go thirsty either!! Breakfast is a good varied choice of hot and cold food so its your fault if you go hungry! We enjoyed ourselves and will no doubt be back again.

Quite & Cosy

Bonglabongla,
We found the room rather small for 2 people and had to jongle with our luggage although there was ample storage space and the bathroom is a decent size with a powerful shower . The lighting was rather bright for our taste. The view was of the countryside and although by a road there's not enough traffic passing through to be a nuisance. The major plus are the dinners and deserts - superb. The pub and dining area are very welcoming as were all of the staff.. The food is well prepared & presented. For vegetarians the best breakfast option is the porridge.

Pleasant short stay

Elaine W, ampthill
We had a very nice time here. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food and service was very good with a varied breakfast selection and good evening meal menu. Real ales in the bar. The room was clean and comfortable. The area is very quiet and peaceful, although a bit remote if you needed shops etc. Cloudy skies did not allow us to see the promised views of the stars but we had interesting walks around the reservoir and woods with spectacular views from the hills.

Great place to stay for a few days whilst exploring the area.

Lovely location, very nice accommodation, excellent food and very pleasant staff. Would certainly recommend The Pheasant when exploring Northumberland or travelling up to Scotland. We were able to get to Alnwick Castle and gardens, have lunch at The Tree House, visit Hadrian's Wall. We even had perfect weather!

Delightful country inn with excellent food and accommodation

JohnScott48, Essex, UK
Stayed here overnight en route to north of Scotland. The countryside in this area is beautiful and we would be tempted to spend a few days here on another occasion, particularly because the Pheasant is a very special place. Although we had just booked bed and breakfast, our accommodation was in the Garden Cottage, a self-catering cottage on two floors. The downstairs area with kitchen and sitting area was huge and very well equipped, not that we took advantage of it! The bedroom was average size, double bed (very comfortable) and a spacious bathroom with an excellent shower. We had an excellent evening meal. I had steak pie while Mrs Scott enjoyed her fish dish (sea bass, I think). Breakfast was good - I took the smoked haddock - although there was a problem in the kitchen which limited the style of eggs. A very pleasant and enjoyable stop.
