Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Great stay

S6031KYsarahm, York
A return visit to this pub after a couple of years and it was as great now as then. The room was clean, cosy and welcoming with a bed you could get lost in! The food was fantastic as before and plenty of choice, something to suit everyone. The staff are attentive without being intrusive and it was lovely to see Annabelle again, who was more than helpful behind the bar. We will be back to this peaceful country retreat, thanks to all.

5* High Quality country pub

The-Travel-eater, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Staying locally, we noticed the very 'traditional country pub' look as we drove past, and decided to try the Pheasant Inn for dinner. Although mid-week, booking was a good idea as the restaurant was quite full and busy. Saying that, the atmosphere was friendly and relaxing. The menu is quite extensive and can be found written on a large chalk board next to the main bar. Good beer, good wine and excellent food quality persuaded our group of 4 adults to dine again the following night. The second night was no disappointment either as standards were consistent for both nights. The Pheasant Inn also does accommodation, which I hear from other diners is very good, but I cannot comment as we had booked elsewhere. On a related negative point, we were advised there is no reliable taxi service nearby so you will need a designated driver.

Nice Lodging in Remote Place

Judgefoodie, Atlanta, Georgia
The pub is characterful but the rooms not so much. Modern and very serviceable with a good bathroom. Staff in the bar and restaurant were very friendly and the dinner food was good. Had a delicious pate and even better sticky toffee pud. Wasn't real fond of the dressed crab. Prawns on ciabatta were excellent. It's a bit of a drive to alternative spots for dinner so you are something of a captive audience. Breakfasts were ordinary at best. I was not keen on the large communal tub of yogurt or the cold rubbery pancakes. Eggs were just fine. A bit off the beaten track but if you need to be in this area it's a good place to stay.

Quiet, remote and pleasant

GaddisGadabout, USA
Comfortable room with conventional bath. Friendly welcome and nice people in the restaurant and pub. We stayed two nights. The pub was quiet and well furnished. They had a good range of beers. The meals and breakfasts were well prepared. In the room, we were amused by a posted midge warning. Apparently, in the warm weather, you best not leave your windows open with the lights on. Quote: "You Have Been Warned." We obeyed the instructions and had no invading midges. There isn't much in the immediate area but it's a short drive to Kielder reservoir and the "dark skies" center.

Its very Pleasant in the Pheasant Inn

Terence W, Sunderland, United Kingdom
My wife and I stayed at the Pheasant Inn and we were delighted with it. The accommodation which was attached to the Pheasant Inn was excellent, it was a nice room with tea and coffee making facilities, the room was very clean with en-suite with shower, a decent view over the countryside, what more could I ask for? The breakfast menu was very good indeed I opted for the Haddock with poached egg, delicious, my wife chose the "full Northumbrian" which she enjoyed too. Evening meals were on offer too, but we had other arrangements with friends near by.
