Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Home from home

Another return trip to the Pheasant which continues not only to retain its high standards of food, drink and accommodation, but also its friendly welcome and service. The Pheasant remains a little gem. Great for exploring Kielder Water and Forest and a visit to the Kielder Observatory is a must. 25 miles north of Hexham, the Pheasant provides an excellent base for exploring Hadrian's Wall (try the AD122 bus from Hexham). We met several new and old returning friends her this year - a testimony to the great hospitality afforded by the Kershaw family and their staff.

A very lovely place to stay and eat

edwmagee, London
Located at the edge of the Northumberland park and close to Keilder Water this is a great place to stay. We expected a room but got a cottage with living room and kitchen. It was really lovely furnished good bed and nice linens Kitchen had a washing machine which we didn't use. Very good wifi and smart TVs with access to iplayer Food was excellent for dinner both nights - we didn't try the deserts as starter and main course were huge and reasonable priced. Breakfast really good and cooked to order. We really enjoyed Vilanda three Roman ruins about 40 minutes drive away, and the observatory sessions aren't to be missed. Well worth a visit

No hot water but will be back

Lovely situ for visiting hadrians wall Kielder water and rural Northumberland . We stayed overnight as we were visiting the obsevertory as a wedding anniversary to see Jupiter and Saturn , we dined there for our evening meal . The food sea bass was perfect with a cheese platter to finish drinks great , the room was very small but comfortable bed and we had a good nights rest , while returning late from observertory we had ordered prosessco and two glasses which were placed in room , we decided to shower to remove midge repellent but there was no hot water , so had to have a cold one brrrrrr Next morning same again no hot water . We did complain to staff in morning as it was too late previous night but they did seem to get the importance of the hot water but we did get small reduction in bill , breakfast was good smoked haddock and poached egg I will diffenitley return as everything else was good and the hotel had problems beyond there control , other guests had same problem .

A special place to stay our third visit. We think it is one of the best in the country. Why,well the food is wonderful and special care is taken, the kitchen goes the extra mile. The rooms are beautiful, clean and the waters hot! The Pheasant stands on its own just above the road ,formally a farmhouse near a group of houses. So it is quite apart from a little road noise in the distance. The bars have a good warm atmosphere every thing polished, the drink is good as well. Hope to return soon if there is space!
