Under new ownership

Mike S, Northumberland, United Kingdom
I was delighted when this hotel came under new owners, especially people who have other local pubs in the area. It had been closed during the winter for a start to be made on refurbishment after years of what can only be described as neglect. I met a colleague here for a light lunch one weekday and expectations were high given that it was obvious much more appeared to have been done to the main downstairs rooms. The public bar looked great and had a good number of people in it. The lounge bar area has not changed much, some new local artists paintings (which are for sale), the walls have been patient and some new curtains put up, but furnishings and carpets have yet to be changed. The optics and shelving behind the counter of the bar have been removed making the bar look bare and uninviting. The fire was lit but it didn't feel warm. We each had a long roll filled with nice beef, gravy and chips. It was plain and simple, two pints of lemonade and lime, followed by two coffees, £20. It came quickly and staff were pleasant. The men's toilet is closed downstairs and we were directed to the first floor. The toilet does not have a wash hand basin and users have to go next door into a bathroom for a basin. Clearly much work is still needed downstairs and I was told that considerable work is still needed to the letting bedrooms. So, this is work in progress and hopefully a return visit in a year's time will result in a much higher ranking. I look forward to that.

Wish we'd gone elsewhere

Having visited and enjoyed many a meal at the Hadrian we chose to take friends their visiting from Scotland. Big mistake. The menu had changed and didn't seem to offer same choice. We ordered and while the portions seemed smaller than I remembered food looked ok. Well it wasn't! Mashed potatoes accompanying steak pie were cold so back it went. Vegetables went back as carrots and broccoli cold. Beans were ok. Thick cut chips with other meals were hard as could have done with more cooking or not cut quite as thick. Staff were apologetic but we were pleased to leave and sadly won't be back. To top it all there was no top on the beer. It was flat! I understand now under new management but unfortunately You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

Canny on the whole..

Stopped over on impulse on a day out for a drive. Had previously stayed a few years ago and thought we'd give it another go. Slightly different experience from our last visit but still enjoyable. We stayed in room 3 which was spacious with a great view across the vale. . As with a few places we have stayed recently meal prices appear to have crept up especially starters, you don't seem to get soup of the day for less than a fiver or anything else for less than seven pound. Our evening meal was really enjoyable though, and washed down with a couple of pints of local ale. Plans are in place apparently to open a micro brewery to provide ales to the hotel. There is a refurb ongoing at present and there are still a few things to be done. noisy loo in Rm.3 for example, but it is still a worthwhile place to stay, especially for walkers, and I'm sure Andy and his team will offer you a warm welcome. Hope to vist again in the future to see the outcome of their endeavours

The Hadrian Hotel replied: Dear golfking50, Thank you so much for visiting us on impulse and for leaving such a great review - works are still underway so we hope you get the chance to visit again, glad you enjoyed this trip! Best wishes, All at The Hadrian

Motorhome Visit for Sunday lunch

tonikg, Dronfield
We called here on a Sunday, as this is a 'Brit Stop' pub. Telephoned in advance to make sure that there was room to park up. We had full Sunday lunch which was excellent. The food was well cooked and plentiful. The staff were helpful and friendly. Total cost was £33.00 for two persons including drinks and tip. Would recommend. The hotel looks to be in the process of being renovated. What has been completed is very good The only downside was that we were disturbed by someone wanting to know why we were parking in a private car park. Clearly they were not aware of the 'Brit Stop' idea.

The Hadrian Hotel replied: Dear tonikg, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great review - having recently taken over The Hadrian we are working hard to get everything right. Apologies for your disturbance, we will make people aware of the "Brit-Stop" idea. Hope to see you again, Best wishes, From all at The Hadrian

Sunday Lunch

The roast meat we had today was beef and pork. Both tender, which for me is the biggest obstacle! It came with 2 Yorkshire puddings and a nice selection of vegetables. Extra gravy was also available. The service is alway friendly. The food at the Hadrian has always been good. The menu has changed since I saw it last year. There used to be a nice home made pork pie with chutney, cheese and salad which I thought was a nice change from cooked dishes. I think the prices have gone up too. I did notice that they are refurbishing the place, which is over due. I understand that there is a new owner who is obviously trying to undertake a huge job, with the refurbishing and decorating. I hope the toilets which are fine will also been replaced and modernised as they have been the same for a long time. I wish them good luck and look forward to seeing the new Hadrian.

The Hadrian Hotel replied: Dear YolandaBage, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review of The Hadrian, it is always good to hear people have enjoyed their visit to us. We have noted your point about the pie and shall see what we can add for our Summer menu and yes, you will be pleased to know the new loos are being installed imminently! We do hope to welcome you again, Best wishes from The Hadrian
