An ok hotel

helenmp38, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
We stayed at linden hall for one night as a treat for myself and husband. The hotel grounds are beautiful, the hotel itself is lovely. We booked an executive room which I was not too impressed with, to me it was more like a spacious standard bedroom. We had a bottle of water and fruit on arrival and apart from that I couldn't see anything executive about it. It certainly didn't have the wow factor for us. The pool and jacuzzi area was lovely although the steam room wasn't working on the day we stayed. We booked a meal in the restaurant, we were told to have a drink in the cocktail bar and someone would bring the menus to us. Three times we asked the same person about the menus, in the end my husband had to go up to the restaurant to get them himself, not exactly good customer service. The food in the restaurant was lovely our steaks were cooked perfectly. We ordered breakfast to our room which arrived on time although items were missing off the order!! All in all the hotel was ok but it could be so much better it was nice to have a night away but it's not somewhere I would rush back to.

Macdonald Hotels - you really need to up your game.

mrsnyoung85, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
I'm not usually one for leaving a poor review but after our stay at Linden Hall, I feel that I have to share a few things. Arrival was great - reception staff were very friendly and informative. We went straight up to the room to be met by a wall of cold! On one of the coldest days of the year, housekeeping had not turned the radiator on. We eventually had to ask for a plug in heater later at about 11pm as the the small radiator underneath the single glazed window just had too much work to do. Macdonald hotels really needs to put more investment in the hotel if it is to compete with similar hotels in the area - the room was quite tired looking with scuff marks on the walls and peeling paintwork on the window frames. However they have made good investment in the beds - they were very comfy and I did have a great night sleep. Dinner was lovely as were the bar staff serving cocktails later into the evening. Breakfast in the morning was a bit of a shambles. On arriving on the dining room, the waiter was trying to sort the paper work - that's fine but when he finished he looked up asked "room number" then said "yeah, just pick a table." Not the service you would expect from a 4 star hotel. Our coffee and toast order was taken and took 10 minutes to get to us and then our breakfast order was taken which then took 35 minutes to be served - so 45 minutes from sitting in the restaurant to being served our breakfast. There were issues with the breakfast - the hash browns were very overcooked. Other diners had started to make complaints about the wait and standard of breakfast so we decided not to make our own complaints. We were checked out by the FOH manager, who did not enquire about our stay (maybe she'd received too many complaints that morning so stopped asking -who knows?). The whole stay of DBB was not worth the £256 I paid.

Disappointed Stay

TheLawFamilyxxx, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
We have just come back from Linden Hall on what should have been a romantic valentines break away in the hotel we were married at, but we have come away feeling let down! Lets say it did not live up to our expectations and happy memories of the Linden Hall we fondly remembered. We arrived at 3pm for check in but were told that our room would not be ready for about half hour so therefore we waited in the bar where we were told there was no draft lager and they only had a few bottles of certain brands of lager left. Our room was very much in need of re decoration with the bath panel needing to be replaced, the tiles grouting and the carpet was torn. We decided to try the pub and were told there was no ice for our drinks! not a unusual ask in a pub! last orders was called at 4.20pm when the opening hours were advertised as 5pm closing. The spa was lovely but again we were disappointed that the steam room was not working. The evening was not too much better we ordered a chicken wrap for £9.50 which came with 2 tiny pieces of chicken in it considering the price we would expect more for our money, £12.50 for scampi and chips which was tasty but don't know how they can justify the price for the small portions. We booked into the restaurant for breakfast at £19.95 each and thought this was there time to shine as hotels breakfasts are always a highlight in our experience, but once again the food was over cooked, dry and nothing spectacular to warrant the extortionate price, broken windows and flaking paintwork added to our irritation of just how the weekend had been. I know it sounds as if we have little positive to say about our stay but Linden Hall we feel that you have let us down and need to give your hotel a little TLC to bring it into line as the beautiful 4 star hotel that you advertise to be.

afternoon tea

trewhitt, northumberland
I booked afternoon tea for my daughter and I, as a birthday treat for me. On arrival we were approached by a gentleman, I told him I had booked afternoon tea and he mumbled something and gave us a strange look. He pointed to a table, where we sat down. We were asked if we wanted tea or coffee and he then disappeared to get it. We were given the tea and the food came shortly after. It looked pitiful! He mumbled something about no savoury scones and pointed to a small patisserie anglaise and asked if we knew what it was. As he walked away I asked him what was in the sandwiches and he mumbled something else. I thought that he mustn't have received the booking as he was so off with us, so I asked him if there was a problem and had he not expected us. He disappeared and came back with a sheet of paper, pointing to our name. So I don't honestly know why he was like this and was it just us or everyone. Anyway, back to the food, we had 4 very small finger sandwiches, apparently they were smoked salmon and cream cheese, ham and tomato, egg and mayo and I think the other was cheese. It was hard to tell as they all tasted the same, bread, 2 scones, 1 plain and 1 fruit each, with jam and cream, they were actually quite tasty and fresh, the cakes were small pieces of, patisserie anglaise, chocolate cake, macaroon and pecan pie which were acceptable. I asked a waitress if we could have some hot water and she was very pleasant. No wonder there weren't many bookings as we were made to feel very uncomfortable. We are no strangers to afternoon tea and have been to quite a few and have always had a choice of teas, a good selection of sandwiches, where you could tell what was in them, with a mixture of scones and cakes, as well as a waitress explaining what was on the plates. I had been looking forward to this but couldn't wait to leave.

Nice relaxing stay

Pauline B, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
A bit disappointed at our recent stay having stayed before. The room was fine although windows could not open to get some air and let out the huge fly. Having had a spa on previous stay was looking forward to the facilities. Again a let down: Hot tub not working. toilet filthy (stains on toilet seat , no loo rolls and sink dirty) showers need maintaining, tiles in pool discoloured and drain cover missing at bottom of pool. The massage was one of little expertise. Food was nice but way overpriced. Need to get a grip of the place before I would return. Staff friendly.
