Very friendly Northumberland Hotel

phoenix021, Kelso, United Kingdom
We had a short break here. The staff were all very welcoming, the majority of them were "locals". The building is very impressive especially the staircase. The grounds are well maintained. We could even see the sea in the distance from our first floor room.

Could be better

skippo_10, Bristol, United Kingdom
The hotel is a lovely old building in beautiful surroundings. The leisure facilities are pretty good - well, the golf course is nice; I didn't go near the spa. The food and beverage staff were friendly and professional. The receptionists were ok but rarely made eye contact when we walked past - a few more smiles would not go amiss. Our room, via a Secret Escapes offer, was small and cramped. The bathroom was shabby. I suppose room sizes (and bed sizes, as ours was narrow) can't be altered, but rattling windows and flaking paintwork can. I thought service in the dining room was fine, but the food offer was just OK. The menu was small and apparently unchanging. There were no specials. My steak was well written up (21 day aged etc) but very average on the plate. Like another reviewer I was puzzled to be offered 'spring greens' in October. Of course they were no such thing. I ordered porridge one morning and was amazed when checking out to be asked for an extra £1 to pay for it. Seriously? I wonder if the chef is coasting? If I returned I'd make sure that I booked a decent sized room with a decent sized bed and recent decoration. And I'd be a bit more challenging about the food I was served. This place gets by because of its position but could be much better without major investment in my opinion.

Lovely couple of days.

Jules2511, South Lanarkshire
We checked in and the staff were really lovely and helpful, in fact they upgraded us to a suite. The suite was lovely but a little ‘tired’ looking and could have used a lick of paint. It’s quite an impressive building but is in need of a freshen up throughout, the carpets in the breakfast room were filthy. Breakfast was fine, staff were lovely. We were there for a charity golf function, the meal on the night was tasty and hot when it needed to be. We used the pub in the grounds twice, once for dinner which was very tasty, especially the soup. The wine was reasonably priced considering where we were. Next day we had lunch there when my severely disabled brother joined us, once again the staff couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful. I would recommend Linden Hall but perhaps wait till they’ve had the carpet cleaners in, can’t fault any of the staff though, including the lovely young lady who cleaned our room. Xxx

Big room,comfortable bed, lovely grounds

Good experience at check-in , friendly and helpful. Long walk through numerous fire doors to Sophie's room ( No. 2 ). Large room with a super king size bed ( 2 x 3ft singles joined ). Nice linen and beautiful towels. Appreciated the robes and slippers. Normal tea/coffee making facilities and fresh milk/ ice can be requested from Room Service .A glass bottle of water is provided in the room which is replenished each day - eco friendly as bottles are cleaned, refilled ,and sealed before delivery to rooms. The good bits of the meals for us were the Bread basket - selection of rolls with butter and olive oil/Balsamic vinegar and the Cheese Board with an interesting selection of 6 different cheeses with biscuits. Other dishes for dinner and breakfast were average or disappointing. We were next to the Spa and enjoyed using the swimming pool which was a good temperature. The hotel grounds are beautiful and we saw Pheasants and a Heron. Check out was friendly and efficient.

Dobson restaurant is just ok

UkCampbell, Newcastle
The drive up to the main building is very nice and there was plenty room to park. The receptionist took us to a waiting room where we order a pre-dinner drink. The room was ok, a bit dark and cold. The waitress brought over the menu. The choice sounded pretty fancy but limited choice, 4 starters and 4 mains. To be honest I struggled to find anything that really excited me. Don't look at the menu on line by the way as it has much more choice and you might get disappointed. We ordered our starters and mains and the bread basket. The room is ok, small, no atmosphere, a bit cold but alright. We had a seat by the window. The bread was great, warm and very tasty, so far so good. The starters were ok, very small portions on big plates but ok, defiantly had better. The mains came and the wife's steak was nice but the pork that I ordered was average and again a tiny portion. The dessert menu also only had 4 choices so we gave it a miss, paid up and headed home. I offered 3 out of 5 for the drive up to the main building and the bread!
