Lord Crewe Arms is a wonderfully characterful and historic inn revamped in 2014 by one of the best small hotel groups in the country, The Calcot Collection. In the honey-stoned medieval village of Blanchland, amid the gorgeous countryside of the North Pennine moors, this cosy and historic Inn-cum-hotel dates back to the 12th century and simply oozes a sense of place and history with the backdrop of the dramatic moorland surrounds. Enjoying the warmest of welcomes not only from the many cosy nooks and fireplaces - guests are made to feel at home with a knowledgeable local team who impart their top tips to guests on the best walks and activities in the area – true Northumberland hospitality!

The hotel’s 26 bedrooms range from cosy doubles to beautiful spacious suites, an ideal bolthole for couples, small families and those travelling with their four legged friends - we love doggies at the Crewe (biscuits, beds and tons of fuss provided) dog walk recommendations are our speciality- all bedrooms are styled with northern country chic and homely touches – new for 2022 some rooms have private garden spaces – perfect for star gazing, nature watching and just moorland musing. Alongside historic remnants of days gone by guests will find relaxed eating areas displaying baronial and monastic touches as befit the building, originally part of Blanchland Abbey. The Bishops Dining Room, perfectly poised at the top of the hotel overlooking the moors and spot on for a lazy breakfast. The Derwent, a cosy nook of a dining space for board games, grazing on bar bait lunch with a bottle of red or a locally brewed pint. Our Hilyard room is grand enough in atmosphere for a medieval banquet and equally special for a dining celebration or romantic dinner for 2 in front of the majestic fireplace. There is no finer place than our garden to wile away an afternoon in the sunshine – perhaps with an afternoon tea or a cocktail or 2 soaking up the moorland view which is our backyard. As for the honest, robust food, it’s in the excellent hands of Emma Broom and her team using seasonal and local fare our guests are spoilt for choice. The restored 15th-century Gatehouse provides the place for private dining, celebrations as well as room for meetings for up to 30 people – a beautiful historic building – an interesting and stunning event space.

Lord Crewe Arms is perfectly positioned in Northumberland to provide our guest with as much or as little activity as they wish - from Hadrian’s Wall and other stunning historic roman ruins, gorgeous gardens, full on activities such as moorland hiking and biking, gentler pursuits with gorgeous gardens and woodland walks to further afield and the breath-taking coastline of Northumberland – the team can help suggest and organise guest itinerary to showcase the best of this beautiful part of the country.
