Deceit and Disappointment at the Dene !

Banj01, Belfast
My extensive review history will hopefully show that I am both experienced and fair. In this case, I queried Jesmond Dene House (after our 2 night stay stay) by email 13 days ago - no response. A follow-up email 9 days ago was also ignored so I telephoned. I received a simple acknowledgement 7 days ago to say " I have passed your email on to our management team and they will I am sure be back to you soon." Having received nothing one week on, I now think it only fair to share my original email to Jesmond Dene House (names removed) with the Tripadvisor community and leave it to the judgement of fellow travellers. "Dear xxxxxx Following our 2 night stay at Jesmond Dene House, I thought I would provide some feedback direct to yourselves, rather than on TripAdvisor (as some would do). You may wish to share this with xxxxx xxxxx who signed our "welcome note". At the end of our son's 4 year stay at Newcastle University we decided to "raise the bar" by staying at Jesmond Dene House - which we had admired in passing on previous visits to Newcastle (usually staying in the honest and humbler New Northumbria). You have a fine house in beautiful surroundings, and the weather was excellent, but we were disappointed. On our arrival, we received a polite business-like welcome from xxxx, but were surprised - at the outset- to have £50 per day "swiped" in advance on our credit card " to cover extras we might order - but refundable if not used". We haven't encountered that before in a reputable establishment. Our "de luxe" room in the "New House" (incurring elevated "Graduation" rates) was spacious and pleasant enough but was showing some signs of wear. Having noted, in our room brochure, that "a discretionary 10% service charge will be added....excluding bar drinks", we were surprised to see that the charge was nevertheless being added to our "bar only" slips - for drinks which we carried ourselves to the terrace. This confusion was compounded by the discovery that the price actually charged was occasionally higher than that quoted on the "Bar List" eg a pint of Anarchy charged at £5. All this left us in the embarrassing situation of having to query direct with bar staff (for whom a genuine service charge would have been intended). I did mention this at checkout and the Receptionist insisted on removing the service charges however you hopefully understand this is not about the money - more the impression created in the mind of guests. Our only meals were cooked breakfasts (included in our rate) which, although acceptable, hardly justified the listed £18 tag. A glance around the rather sparse continental buffet table (in need of replenishment well before 10am) made us wonder how some other guests might have felt. On the plus side, and perhaps tellingly, the one member of staff who stood out as being warm, welcoming and friendly was one of your housekeeping ladies (whose name may have been xxxx). I only offer this as constructive feedback from our perspective as people who, having used the agreeable New Northumbria in the past, and having stayed in many 4 star establishments elsewhere, really looked forward to something special from the higher rated Jesmond Dene House but who left feeling rather short changed. Regards xxxxxxx"

Not as good as it used to be..

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights over a weekend. We actually stayed in Jesmond Dene in 2014 for our wedding. Unfortunately the hotel service was not as good as it was, which was quite disappointing. It's still a beautiful hotel that is well located, but the service wasn't like it used to be.

You must stay here!

This hotel has character, is located in beautiful surroundings and our room had everything required to make our stay magnificent. Set in secluded surroundings, car parking is close and accessible. The staff are professional, helpful and our welcome 'in- room' had a personal touch that made us feel we had made a great choice. The restaurant is intimate yet spacious with a lounge for pre-dinner drinks. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and the service was great. The selection of food is wide and the meals were of high quality and delicious. Our stay was relaxing and hugely enjoyable - you can see that the management has taken a great deal of care to ensure that the facilities and staff are of the highest standard.

nice boutique hotel

got here by taxi which took ten minutes from the train station. There seemed to be ample parking as well. The surroundings are beautiful with lots of flowers blooming, really nice. the building is also very pretty, a mix between Edwardian and Victorian. reception was friendly and helpful. My room was fine, it had desk space and slippers and bathrobe as well as coffee and tea making facilities and a minibar (though no price list). Sleeping comfort was good. I liked I could open the window, though there was loud machinery noise outside so I had to shut it to go to sleep. Bathroom was comfy, though no bath but a good shower. Toiletries were plenty and quite nice. I had ordered roomservice breakfast but alas only half the items I ordered arrived, it was really weird so there was jam and butter but no toast at all, which I had asked for as well as bread and a few more things. the breakfast that was there was delicious: scrambled eggs with mushroom and tomato. Really tasty and good quality. shame there wasn't more. the waiter also rushed in so quickly I didn't even have the chance to tell him so I left it, but was sorry to have missed out on the rest of my breakfast. I had ordered a newspaper and this was delivered in a nice hotel bag. All the details were nice, fresh plants in the room and some lovely decorative vases and so on. The bed was laid very stiffly, when I took the duvet off, the sheet came off with it. Some people like it that way, but I prefer a softer feel to the duvet, though that was alright. I asked if I could postpone my check out time which was granted, great! They also printed some documents for me for free. I ordered some lunch room service, that wasn't great. nice tomato and mozzarella but a very small portion. chips ddn't taste very fresh. Checkout was easy and friendly and al in all I had a good pleasant stay. shame about the breakfast. I do like independent hotels so don't want to fault them as otherwise it was very good and all the staff were always smiling, even if they just walked past you in the parking area outside. Good job!
