Great for afternoon tea

Rosalind D,
Took my friend here who was visiting from New Zealand. Lovely venue and nice ambience with lots of different groups of ladies enjoying afternoon tea. Lots of finger sandwiches, quiche, various scones and plenty of tasty deserts all beautifully presented with an endless supply of tea. A good choice of teas was a also available. All nicely served and the waiting staff were friendly and helpful. There was far too much but our waiter happily boxed what was left to take home and our kids enjoyed the rest when we got home! It's obviously not the cheapest place in Newcastle for tea, but for a special occasion, I'd highly recommend it.

Overnight stay on road trip

sarahjross, Norwich, United Kingdom
We've stayed @ Jesmond Dene several times (our daughter was @ university) in recent years. The hotel is outstanding value: beautiful, secluded and quiet (it's ~10 minute by taxi to the city centre). The main asset is (sic) the staff. They are uniformly well trained, courteous and charming. The restaurant is superb - my wife and I had wonderful Dover sole. (I understand that the only factor limiting the hotel's star rating is the absence of air-conditioning as a consequence of listed building status)

The Friendliest Hotel In Newcastle.

jmax25, Durham, United Kingdom
The friendliest hotel in Newcastle set in an idyllic picturesque location. It's a city luxury hotel set in woodland and manicured gardens and an ample car park. The entrance has no steps, plus the entrance doors are automatic which is essential for us.

Relaxing Country House hotel in the City

Philip_G746, Pontefract, England, United Kingdom
This is a fantastic venue on the edge of Jesmond Dene, arguably the best public park in the country. The dene is a park given to the city by the first Lord Armstrong when he no longer needed it for a city house. The building is an interesting building, having been a family home, a school for boys, a school for "wayward girls" according to a local who used to deliver milk there, offices, conference centre and now a comfortable hotel. Our room was comfortable but a little cluttered, and we needed the fan. We had a lovely evening meal with a moderate choice of dishes but very well cooked and presented. The sweets were outstanding. Breakfast was delicious. They bring you your cooked breakfast (no queues for buffets style) which meant that the scrambled eggs hadn't congealed to a rubbery mess, the black pudding hadn't dried up and everything on the plate was just right. Much much better than the usual buffet type of breakfast you get in the chain hotels although it was a bit pricier at £18.00. It is well placed for trip into Newcastle or trips into Northumberland.

Deceit and Disappointment at the Dene !

Banj01, Belfast
My extensive review history will hopefully show that I am both experienced and fair. In this case, I queried Jesmond Dene House (after our 2 night stay stay) by email 13 days ago - no response. A follow-up email 9 days ago was also ignored so I telephoned. I received a simple acknowledgement 7 days ago to say " I have passed your email on to our management team and they will I am sure be back to you soon." Having received nothing one week on, I now think it only fair to share my original email to Jesmond Dene House (names removed) with the Tripadvisor community and leave it to the judgement of fellow travellers. "Dear xxxxxx Following our 2 night stay at Jesmond Dene House, I thought I would provide some feedback direct to yourselves, rather than on TripAdvisor (as some would do). You may wish to share this with xxxxx xxxxx who signed our "welcome note". At the end of our son's 4 year stay at Newcastle University we decided to "raise the bar" by staying at Jesmond Dene House - which we had admired in passing on previous visits to Newcastle (usually staying in the honest and humbler New Northumbria). You have a fine house in beautiful surroundings, and the weather was excellent, but we were disappointed. On our arrival, we received a polite business-like welcome from xxxx, but were surprised - at the outset- to have £50 per day "swiped" in advance on our credit card " to cover extras we might order - but refundable if not used". We haven't encountered that before in a reputable establishment. Our "de luxe" room in the "New House" (incurring elevated "Graduation" rates) was spacious and pleasant enough but was showing some signs of wear. Having noted, in our room brochure, that "a discretionary 10% service charge will be added....excluding bar drinks", we were surprised to see that the charge was nevertheless being added to our "bar only" slips - for drinks which we carried ourselves to the terrace. This confusion was compounded by the discovery that the price actually charged was occasionally higher than that quoted on the "Bar List" eg a pint of Anarchy charged at £5. All this left us in the embarrassing situation of having to query direct with bar staff (for whom a genuine service charge would have been intended). I did mention this at checkout and the Receptionist insisted on removing the service charges however you hopefully understand this is not about the money - more the impression created in the mind of guests. Our only meals were cooked breakfasts (included in our rate) which, although acceptable, hardly justified the listed £18 tag. A glance around the rather sparse continental buffet table (in need of replenishment well before 10am) made us wonder how some other guests might have felt. On the plus side, and perhaps tellingly, the one member of staff who stood out as being warm, welcoming and friendly was one of your housekeeping ladies (whose name may have been xxxx). I only offer this as constructive feedback from our perspective as people who, having used the agreeable New Northumbria in the past, and having stayed in many 4 star establishments elsewhere, really looked forward to something special from the higher rated Jesmond Dene House but who left feeling rather short changed. Regards xxxxxxx"
