Overview

Wooler Hostel and Shepherd's Huts offer a traditional 3* Youth Hostelling experience with a truly northern welcome; providing good value, low cost, spacious accommodation suitable for single travellers, families, large groups- including schools, universities, and sporting clubs- looking to stay in North Northumberland. Guests can enjoy a stay in one of the newly refurbished en-suite bedrooms in the hostel or in one of the traditional and distinctive Shepherd's Huts- which capture the true spirit of the Northumbrian countryside. A former Land Army Girls' hostel, the building is accessible throughout for all ages and abilities and located in extensive well maintained grounds rich in wildlife.

In an enviable rural location on the edge of Northumberland National Park with panoramic views across Glendale, Wooler Hostel is one of the area's most understated places to stay with access to the hills and countryside of North Northumberland and the National Park on your doorstep. In 2013 The Park was awarded 'Dark Sky Status' and visitors to Wooler during the winter months are rewarded generously with some of the deepest darkest skies.

Come and marvel at the historical, geological and natural environment of The Cheviot Hills and Glendale while out walking or cycling, before returning to the hostel to recall your adventure and around the wood burning stove, safe in the knowledge your equipment will be drying out ready for the next days adventure. Choose from self-catering, or for those guests who wish, we offer delicious home-cooked hearty meals at reasonable prices.

Guests can access countless short walks in the local area, and longer walks into the Cheviot Hills. Cyclists have access to limitless terrain, from Wooler - the home of the Wooler Cycle Hub- with 7 routes radiating from the centre of Glendale. And for the serious cyclists, there is the Wooler Wheel sportive to tackle.
Whether you're a lone path trekker, long distance cyclist, family fun forager, or a group out for a gathering – for a day, short break, or longer- Wooler Hostel will help you recharge – just as it looked after the girls in the War!

A welcome place to stay after a rainy day hiking

Richard K,
The hostel in Wooler is nothing much to look at, but the place has a very interesting history, the accommodations are completely adequate, the breakfast was large, and the staff are very interesting (and they say that Geordies speak English, but we're not so sure! :-) And while in Wooler, go to the #1 Hotel and Wine Lounge for a drink.,.. a wonderful gentleman and his large dog own it (he said it was his retirement project).

Wooler Youth Hostel & Shepherds Huts replied: Thank you for your review, we're proud of the history behind the hostel. Hope to see you in Wooler again soon! Best wishes from the team.

Cosy Wooler

NigelRunner, Leicestershire, United Kingdom
We stayed in a 3 person Shepherds Hut - double bed, and single over the top as a bunk. This was quite OK for our short visit. A heater in the room if you need it, electric lights. Toilet/shower a hop skip and jump away at the corner of the main building. The main hostel room - only one - is a lounge cum dining room adjacent to the smallish well-equipped members kitchen. We walked down to the village centre for our evening meal - beware that some of the places are very popular and booked up. An early morning run along the tacks and out into the hills was refreshing - very quickly you are into open moor side/woodland/sheep fields. The Shepherds huts are tucked around the back - about 4 of them together. The over hanging trees does make this a bit of a dull area.

Wooler Youth Hostel & Shepherds Huts replied: We're delighted you enjoyed your stay in one of our Shepherd's Huts and managed to get out into the local countryside, it was great to have you stay with us. Thank you for the valuable feedback about the dark areas- we will try to address this. Hope to see you again. Best wishes from the team.

Good value.

Our first visit to YHA Wooler and stayed in the shepherds hut. something a bit different! it was good value for money and although we didn't have the grandchildren with us I'm sure they would have preferred this to staying indoors. We had breakfast in the hostel which was plentiful. well worth what we paid for it. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Wooler Youth Hostel & Shepherds Huts replied: Thank you for taking the time to submit a review, we're pleased you had a pleasant stay with us, hopefully your grandchildren will come and stay next time! Best wishes from the team.

Quirky accommodation in historical setting. Beautiful little find.

Accommodation is an adapted land army base from WW2. Steeped in history and nicely located for trips across Northumberland. Used as base for Seahouses and Lindisfarne. Information regards previous history located within building. Large property and has own car park / grounds. Large kitchen and communal area. Easy to self cater. Enjoyed breakfasts each day but ate out and cooked self within kitchen.showers were nice and hot. Whole place was clean and tidy. Local Coop useful for necessities. There are local pubs but did not use on this occasion. Rooms were simple but comfortable. Beds were comfortable. All in all a rather cute find.

Basic but just the job

TimandPat55, Manchester, United Kingdom
Stayed here for our first night on the Sandstone Way and were so exhausted we slept well, despite the sheet sleeping bags. Room was small but with just two of us and not much stuff was fine. Ensuite with great hot shower an added bonus. Loved the Land Girl history of the building and enjoyed the breakfast.
