Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

Fascinating insight into Corbridge in Roman times

Gilly C, Melbourne, Australia
A very interesting museum in two parts. The outside part is fascinating, a tour of the remains of the Roman town. There are plenty of information boards, explaining what each place was and reconstructing how they thought it would have been in Roman times. The inside part is equally fascinating, displaying many household items that would have been in regular use. Most impressive was the Corbridge Hoard, a chest discovered 50 years ago, containing a treasure trove of Roman artifacts.

Super little village

E A, Birmingham, United Kingdom
Corbridge, is a super little village. There's obviously lots of Roman history. The shops are independent. Lots of interesting gift, ladies, men's, restaurants, tea shops. The buildings of interest too. The owners's wife, in the rather well stocked Man's shop, (sorry the name escapes me at the moment) was delightful and very helpful. All in all a lovely couple of hours.
