Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

Excellent audio guide

tonyemha, Bradford, United Kingdom
An excellent audio guide, worth having for bringing to life the remarkable ruins of the town. I was surprised at how high some of the structures were and how clearly some of the buildings (e.g. the granaries) could be visualized. You got the sense of streets and blocks and the separation of the different bits of the town community.

Fascinating slice of history

Michael C, Market Drayton, United Kingdom
The site is extensive but the audio guide is an excellent accompaniment for a unique insight into a Roman border fort and town. The museum, too, is well laid out and has a very interesting collection of artefacts: the Corbridge Hoard of Roman armour and other metal objects, and the epigraphic collection are particularly significant

Roman grnaries

Annette S, Newcastle, United Kingdom
Really good example of Roman granaries, we spent about 2 hours there. There is no cafe but they do have hot drinks. We visited in April so it was a bit cold and blowy, consider bringing a coat whenever you visit as there is a lot to look at outside and Northumberland can get wet cold and blowy whatever the season!

A wonderful insight into Roman history

cornforth347, Melton Mowbray, United Kingdom
Many hours can be spent walking around the historical site. Well presented with many artefacts to view and information readily available. The Romans were the first society to use underfloor heating. It is indeed, well worth a visit. You'll be impressed.

Worth a look

Robert B, Pontefract, United Kingdom
A wonderful sunny day probably helped our visit but it was certainly worth the effort. We spent a few hours wandering around and reading the notices around the site, we also took turns to wander around the museum. English Heritage are our favourite as we can take the dogs to most sites.
