Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

Excellent all round

Very interesting site to visit....plenty above ground to see and well laid out with information boards, and a very good tour from Lynn. Museum is excellent...well laid out, plenty of information and a great variety of site finds. Visited most local Roman sites and this one is the most interesting.

Very interesting

Visited here with my 9 year old son. I found it very informative and enjoyed it, my son didn't really appreciate it but enjoyed pretend 'sword fighting' so that kept him occupied. Worth a visit.

Off the beaten track

This roman ruin is more remote and less busy than some of the higher profile sites but it is well worth a visit. The ruins are interesting and you can get an idea of the layout of a roman town. It was interesting to see how the buildings had shifted as subsidence had occurred caused by earlier structures underneath. There is a small museum here too which is worth exploring.

An Excellent Site to Visit

Theodore O, Oakland, NJ
My wife and I visited Corbridge and found it to be extremely interesting and well preserved. The audio tour was excellent and led us through different parts of the city while giving us historical and archaeological context. We spent about an hour here and it was an hour well spent!

Excellent place to visit and very dog friendly!

Sophie P,
Really enjoyed our visit today and it was lovely for the dogs to be welcomed with a biscuit each! The museum isn't dog friendly which is understandable but the rest of the site is. The audio tour is great and I thoroughly enjoyed the ruins which were some of the best I've seen! We all had a fantastic time and the ladies were very helpful in suggesting another superb place to visit! Highly recommended!
