Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

We were lucky to visit here on a sunny day and were we ever impressed. Such a charming place to visit. Plenty of pubs and all doing food and lots of local shops selling quality goods. A hidden gem.

First of the Forts

We visited 3 Roman forts along Hadrian's Wall over 2 days. This one is interesting from the perspective that you can see the remains of Stane Street which ran between Corbridge and Carlisle and formed the idea of the line of Hadrian's Wall which was built later. The audio tour is fine to get the hand of things if you miss the guided tour.

A good insight to the lives of those working on Hadrians Wall.

Tania J,
We took advantage of a guided tour and talk, a must if you want to get a better feel of what life would have been like.

Fascinating Place

Well excavated remains of a Roman supply town for the forts along Hadrian's Wall. The price comes with an audio guide which is very interesting, but can be a little long-winded in places. There are plenty of information boards if audio guides aren't your thing and it's fascinating to be able to walk freely amongst the ruins and imagine what it must have been like almost 2,000 years ago. If Roman history is your thing, it's well worth a visit as a contrast to the purely military forts on the wall.
