Ok day out

EMJetten, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Arrived at 9.30 and had the whole place to ourself for an hour or so. Was given robes and towels and managed to get a seat. Steam room and sauna were nice although the sauna needs a face lift, just plain white walls with paint peeling off. We ordered breakfast which was lovely however around 11am the pool was full of kids running around, which spoilt it as it's meant to be a relaxing day. All 3 of us had a massage and facial at 1pm which we all loved, except my masuse did not stop talking to me which meant I could not relax. Showers with toiletries are available although only one toilet for the whole place isn't enough. Afternoon tea was through the lobby area which although did not seem busy the service really lacked here. There was a lot of dirty tables and it took at least 15 minutes for a glass of prosecco to arrive. We asked for another pot of tea and some milk which never came. Sandwiches and scones were gorgeous but when I booked I informed them I was allergic to nuts, but they still brought cakes with nuts on - just on a separate plate! There were no staff when we were ready to leave so we went through to reception where all staff were booking customers in. We waited for 5 minutes and could have easily walked out without paying. When the staff offered help she was not aware we needed to pay for the glass of prosecco which wasn't included in the package. Again we could have just left it. A nice day out but glad I got the voucher on wowcher as I wouldn't pay the money to visit this place otherwise.

Poor experience

PBPG, Leeds, England, United Kingdom
We first visited here before the Macdonald’s group bought it and in the two visits since it does seem to have gone downhill. The setting is very good, and it looks the part of a country hotel but this visit may well be our last visit. There was no one on reception when we arrived, had to go looking for someone. Adele eventually turned up and was very apologetic and friendly. My lamb for dinner was almost very small and tasteless. The poached peach dessert was a joke,, three tiny pieces of peach awash with raspberry sauce and ice cream, very disappointing. I wanted a Grand Marnier after dinner but they had run out. We ate out for the second night. We had breakfast on two days. The plates were dangerously hot, I understand they got to have hot plates to keep the food warm but there are limits. The breakfast used to be very good but is now average at best. On the second day the bacon looked very peculiar colour, a tan colour in some parts and had a strange taste, I didn’t eat that. The price of a cooked breakfast, if not included in your package, is £19:50, but of you want a kipper, that is an additional £2.75. How that can be justified I don’t know. There were two occasions when the waitress came out with plates of breakfast offering it around with no takers, it had an amusing element but it smacked of some serious mis-management. Glad it wasn’t my breakfast! The seats in the dining room need re stuffing or replacing. You sink down in the middle of them and the table then feels too high. We had room 20. It is a good sized room with a very large bed but so many things let it down. The chain on the door had nothing to hook it to, the curtains had no tie backs, though the fittings were on the wall. The bathroom needs a refurb all looking a bit old, the grout going black in places. The shower was dangerous, giving blasts of scolding hot water periodically and the shower head points towards the wall, couldn’t get it to point straight down. There is a one way system in operation for cars. We came back in the evening when it was dark to be met by a vehicle coming away from the hotel on the in lane. There are posts all down the side so the oncoming vehicle had to reverse some way before we could pass. The signage for this system is almost nonexistent. There is one small non illuminated no entry sign on the inbound lane and nothing I could see to direct you to the outbound lane. If all of the above that wasn’t bad enough there was an event going on. We had the room next door to the room the event was in and the noise was crazy, no chance of sleep. I appreciate that hotels host events but there was no mention when we booked. Why don’t they allocate bedrooms near the main room to those from the event that are staying? When we mentioned it in the morning we were told the group had been contacted to turn the noise down and to close the exterior doors so we were obviously not the only people suffering!

AFTERNOON TEA APATHY

robertadixon, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
A poor effort by this beautifully located country hotel. Sandwiches were ruined by dry bread. Scones tasty, but with limited supplies of butter, cream and jam. Cakes were mass produced. An initial cup of tea was not replenished freely. Staff were in short supply. Overall very disappointing and only just worthy of an average rating.

3 or 4?

Joops07, Leicestershire, United Kingdom
Stayed for two nights using Tesco tokens which didn't cover the full cost so still spent a good amount on the accommodation. It was good to see lots of people staying, golf breaks, spa breaks and a wedding party (wedding on the Monday). The staff are very pleasant and it was good to experience a more traditional service, especially at breakfast. In parts the hotel is showing its age and could do with a bit of general maintenance. Maybe because we were using Tesco tokens we were not in the best room but overall we had a comfortable stay. Good swimming pool, sauna and steam room which is available free of charge for hotel guests. At breakfast time the cooked option was a bit dry, obviously cooked early and kept warm, but there was plenty of choice and lovely tables near the windows to look out onto the garden and golf course. The restaurant is expensive and the on site pub has a limited menu which had unhealthy choices so we we out for evening meals. So....score 4 for location, room comfort, cleanliness, staff friendliness. Score 3 for general maintenance, noise late at night from the wedding venue and some of the breakfast food!

Very friendly staff overall an enjoyable stay which was spoilt by a meal in the Linden Tree Pub

paulquayle53, Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom
It was celebration trip to use the golf facilities and enjoy the hotel where we stayed around 4 years ago. The staff are very attentive and friendly and the room while old was clean and comfortable. Following a round of golf on the excellent golf course we booked to eat in the Linden Tree Pub where we had had excellent meals and service on our previous visit unfortunately this time we experienced probably the worst meal I ever had. Surely when you have a limited menu the time to tell guests if something is not available is when you hand them the menu not when you come to take the order. Having being informed the fish and chips were off I hastily looked for something else not wanting a burger I opted for the 220g rump steak which at £24.95 is way overpriced and when then it was delivered well done when medium rare had been requested. This had been preceded by the starter of a Blue Cheese souffle which was basically liquid chees with a burnt topping. The result was not suprising when you looked in the kitchen where there were two young lads doing the cooking obviously out of there depth. I have to say we changed our booking into Dobsons in the main hotel the following night and whole meal and service was excellent. So overall an enjoyable stay but spoilt by the experience on the first night. I gave my feedback to the Receptionist who assured me it would be looked into, maybe a response from the manager would convince me they take complaints seriously.
