Overview

Herding Hill Farm is a superb caravan, camping and glamping site in the shadow of Hadrians Wall.

We are only a 15 minutes walk from Cawfields Quarry on Hadrians Wall and the centre of Britian town of Haltwhistle. The site was brand new for 2012. We are open most of the year and have a state of art amenity block which has a sauna, drying room, laundry room, covered washing up area, family/accessible shower room and is underfloor heated along with solar panels. We have thirteen 9m x 9m "caravan club" spec hardstanding pitches with 16A electric hook up of which three are super pitches, 8 premier electric grass pitches for tents or caravans. We have fabulous wooden heated wigwam cabins/pods, three large 4/5 berth, ten 4/5 berth ensuite wigwams that have hot tubs and four 2/3 berth available to hire. We also have a luxury retreat holiday lodge that has three bedrooms and its own private hot tub. We have a fabulous Tentipi & Lotus Belle Tent glamping village. This is located in a private part of the site that has amazing views. This area has a communal gathering area and a wildlife pond. We have a site wide Wi-Fi system. Our onsite Shop is licensed to sell alcoholic drinks off the premises and we also prepare homemade pizzas using only top quality ingredients which we deliver to your pitch. (The times vary over the year so take a look at our website) Bring the children to meet our resident, alpacas, donkeys, miniture shetland pony, goats, pig, ducks & hens. Wigwams occupants have the option of hiring one of our firepits. We also have a fabulous childrens play area. We also have a nice country pub just half a mile from us towards Hadrians Wall.

Road directions

If you are towing a caravan please do not follow Sat Nav systems as this may take you up Shield Hill from Haltwhistle which is extremely steep for a caravan. Travelling from the east on the A69 continue past Haltwhistle and after around 3 miles you will see a right turn to Greenhead, after 100 meters turn right at the junction of the B6318 and after 3 miles you will then pick up our brown tourist signs at the Milecastle Inn. From the West also take the Greenhead turn off the A69.

Public transport

We have the AD122 Hadrians Wall bus that stops outside our gates. This runs between Hexham and Haltwhistle usually Marich to September but please check on the Go North East website.

We are just 2 miles away from Haltwhistle railway station which is on the Newcastle to Carlisle line.

Great places! Little hidden gem

Shyra B, Manchester
Great place, lovely staff. Nice little get away. Wigwams are spacious with everything you need inside! Will definitely be coming back. My advice would be to rent a croc box, as it is very useful and there are onsite sinks to clean all your pots. Onsite showers are also there and are kept clean.

Beautiful location!

Gillian R, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Stayed here for long weekend with my family. Pods are lovely and clean, showers/toilets absolutely spotless and showers spacious and modern. The surroundings and views are lovely including the small animal farm - great from the kids! Staff all very friendly and helpful! The only negative to herding hill which stopped me from giving it a full 5/5 and may make me look elsewhere is the sneaky extra charges. One card allowed at each pod - £5 per night for an extra car. Also you are not allowed to take your own fire pit - but they charge you £15 per night to use theirs.........for us this is a fundamental to outdoor holiday! sauna, bbq but etc all an extra charge too!

28 Apr 17 Another visit

Tony L, Chester-le-Street, United Kingdom
We stumbled across this site a few years ago and like to visit at least once a year. Its in a great location for exploring Northumberland and the Roman wall, Houstesteads and Vindolanda are on the doorstep along with some of the best views along the wall itself, there is also a pub serving food a short walk away. The town of Haltwhistle is a short drive away with an assortment of shops and some great pubs too. The site itself is superb, pizzas made on site can be ordered and delivered, well kept and slowly being developed with a nice toilet block.

Overall 5*++++

Rachael T, Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Just arrived home after 4 nights here . This is our second visit we came 4 years ago when the camp was less developed . We had a fantastic 4 nights just a few little things that could of made it better ... the hot tub was no where near as nice as the first time we stayed , must be a cheaper version and this resulted in no colour change lighting and wasn't as hot so couldn't stay in past 8pm on a night as was too cold . The light on the front of the wigwam didn't work and no lightening on the camp so on exiting the hot tub or heading to and from the shower block it was very very dark and could be dangerous . also entering and exiting the hot tub make sure u take flip flops as the newer wigwams doesn't have paving slabs it has gravel ! An overall 5* clean and relaxing camp site it's just the finer detail that needs sorting now .

Glamping Novices

graemeandsophie, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Not exactly the camping type, booked this with friends (mainly because they had alpacas) for the Easter Weekend and stayed in one of the Running Water wigwams. We liked the ensuite and the hot tub (although bit rainy on the second day so didn't get as much use out of it as we'd hoped!), the beds weren't the most comfortable but we had two doubles so there was plenty of space. Only downsides were we had hoped to be able to walk most places but unfortunately that wasn't possible. It was also quite isolated, and the little town didn't have that much to offer- we found the pubs to be overcrowded and bleak although the chinese was very good! We also had our door knocked on quite early for the Easter Quiz on Sunday morning, which if we had children we might have appreciated but being sleep starved adults we weren't so fond of. We would have liked to be able to use the hot tub in the morning of our departure but again this wasn't allowed. Neither of us could get the wifi but thankfully we hadn't bought it! Could also do with more than one hairdryer in the amenities block.

Herding Hill Farm, Luxury 5 Star Caravan, Camping & Glamping Site replied: Hi Sophie Thank you for taking the time out to write a review, first of all may we apologise for knocking on your door at 9am on Sunday, on our system we had your wigwam down as having a child and this of course was a mistake. The wooden wigwams are an alternative to camping under canvas as you have the same experience as camping but with the comfort. We rarely receive feedback about the beds being comfortable but expectations are also very different. They are a high density foam with a washable, breathable cover and before we chose to buy wigwams we as a family stayed in one and I found them comfortable and that is with a back injury. We are in the heart of Hadrians Wall country and have many walks on our doorstep, upon checking in you should have been handed a sheet that has two circular walks from the site, one takes you down Haltwhistle burn which is a hidden gem, a beautiful natural gorge. You can also go this way into Haltwhistle town. Haltwhistle is a small town and claims to be the centre of Britian. It has a variety of shops, cafes and takeaways and the pubs are all very different to each other, our favorite is the Black Bull in the market square, it is only small but has a great atmosphere and good food too. Just outside the town there is also an outdoor heated swimming pool and leisure center. Our site wide WiFi system does cover the whole site but as with any system the weather can effect the signal and as you mention the weather was rather damp for an Easter weekend. We have one hairdryer in the ladies and gents and their is a socket in the ladies privacy cubicle for hair straighteners to be used but it can used for your own hairdryer. The hot tubs are available to use between 9am and 10pm every day of your stay and our check out is 10am which allows us time to clean these and the wigwams for new guests, during quieter periods we are flexible on this departure time. You could have used the hot tub on the morning and you should have mentioned this to our member of staff as they could have started draining down one of the other 9 hot tubs. Thank you and we do hope to see you again soon.
