Overview

Herding Hill Farm is a superb caravan, camping and glamping site in the shadow of Hadrians Wall.

We are only a 15 minutes walk from Cawfields Quarry on Hadrians Wall and the centre of Britian town of Haltwhistle. The site was brand new for 2012. We are open most of the year and have a state of art amenity block which has a sauna, drying room, laundry room, covered washing up area, family/accessible shower room and is underfloor heated along with solar panels. We have thirteen 9m x 9m "caravan club" spec hardstanding pitches with 16A electric hook up of which three are super pitches, 8 premier electric grass pitches for tents or caravans. We have fabulous wooden heated wigwam cabins/pods, three large 4/5 berth, ten 4/5 berth ensuite wigwams that have hot tubs and four 2/3 berth available to hire. We also have a luxury retreat holiday lodge that has three bedrooms and its own private hot tub. We have a fabulous Tentipi & Lotus Belle Tent glamping village. This is located in a private part of the site that has amazing views. This area has a communal gathering area and a wildlife pond. We have a site wide Wi-Fi system. Our onsite Shop is licensed to sell alcoholic drinks off the premises and we also prepare homemade pizzas using only top quality ingredients which we deliver to your pitch. (The times vary over the year so take a look at our website) Bring the children to meet our resident, alpacas, donkeys, miniture shetland pony, goats, pig, ducks & hens. Wigwams occupants have the option of hiring one of our firepits. We also have a fabulous childrens play area. We also have a nice country pub just half a mile from us towards Hadrians Wall.

Road directions

If you are towing a caravan please do not follow Sat Nav systems as this may take you up Shield Hill from Haltwhistle which is extremely steep for a caravan. Travelling from the east on the A69 continue past Haltwhistle and after around 3 miles you will see a right turn to Greenhead, after 100 meters turn right at the junction of the B6318 and after 3 miles you will then pick up our brown tourist signs at the Milecastle Inn. From the West also take the Greenhead turn off the A69.

Public transport

We have the AD122 Hadrians Wall bus that stops outside our gates. This runs between Hexham and Haltwhistle usually Marich to September but please check on the Go North East website.

We are just 2 miles away from Haltwhistle railway station which is on the Newcastle to Carlisle line.

One night stay in a tent, September 2017 with children (aged 2 and 6)

anon7133, County Durham, United Kingdom
Tried to book a one night stay here for September in July/August as our kids do tennis and football on Saturday mornings however the site was taking two night bookings only. The staff mentioned we could stay for one night, but asked us to call back the week before the date we wished to arrive to check availability. I called back in September the Monday beforehand and the staff happily booked us into a one night stay as promised. Upon arrival, the gentleman welcomed us at the desk and gave us a map of the site, described where the facilities were, provided us with our pitch number and offered us with a list of times for animal feeding and pizza ordering. The site location was excellent as it was extremely close to the, IMO, best part of Hadrian's Wall and we took the kids to both Waltown Crags and Cawfields - both easily accessible within ten mins by car. The pitch itself was a large, well kept area, comfortable enough for our vango anteus 600 - 6 person tent with plenty of space to park the car, pitch the tent and still leave a decent sized grassed area to the tent entrance; which we used for sitting and a few small ball games with the kids. The electrical supply also worked fine with no drops in service. The site has wifi but I didn't use this and therefore can't comment on its service speed and reliability. The toilet block and pot wash area are the nicest & cleanest facilities I've ever seen on a campsite. The site has obviously spent money wisely and worked hard to create this area. If this is an important factor when booking a trip, then I don't think you'll be disappointed. There isn't a great deal of space for ball games etc. But there is a fairly large, nice play area for the kids and a few grassed areas dotted around the site and we squeezed a couple of games of tennis and football in. The largest grassed area was used quite a lot by a few families playing cricket near the wigwams and seemed large enough. All the families seemed to be enjoying the hot tubs as well. The touring spaces looked extremely spacious and well maintained, a number of old Austin cars were present at the same time as our stay, which the kids loved. I noticed that these spaces had enough room for the tourer, trailer and car and looked spacious enough. We ordered pizzas and were given a time to except them which was handy as we could plan things with the kids. The pizzas were delivered exactly on time by the staff in their golf buggy and along with our chips were a nice meal. The kids loved feeding and petting the animals at the feeding times on an evening and morning. The gentleman feeding the animals offered kids the opportunity to feed the animals and stroke the more friendly ones like donkeys and rabbits. The site was extremely quiet, which was something we were after. We watched a DVD quietly with the kids whilst we ate our pizzas and after the kids went to sleep, I sat outside doing some uni work on my tablet until about midnight and the site was extremely peaceful throughout - and nobody came and asked me to go to bed as others have commented. Overall, if you're after a clean, quiet site with excellent facilities, a play area for the kids and a good location to stay whilst you explore the national park and Hadrian's Wall, look no further. I thought the site provided good value for money and we will definitely be coming back.

Great location

olibot, Durham, United Kingdom
Herding Hill Farm is in a great location, and had nice level super pitches. It's not too big. Friends of ours stayed in a Wigwam, and they reported it was quite good. Although they were surprised as to what was not included in the £90 per night!!! The pizzas were ok (assembled on site, as the bases are precooked bought in). As obviously very popular as the golf buggy delivering them was constantly zipping around! The biggest issue we had was noise - parties at both ends. An 18th birthday that went on past midnight (noise curfew is 10.30), and another party at the Wigwam end.

Herding Hill Farm, Luxury 5 Star Caravan, Camping & Glamping Site replied: Thank you for your review. We always wanted to provide large pitches and decided to make them 9m x 9m to give plenty of space. Our wigwams cabins are very popular and give guests a fabulous outdoor experience. Our prices are clearly shown on our website and we recall your friends staying in a wigwam asking about crockery. We have croc boxes available at £4 per night, we haven't ever provided crockery as we felt it would be difficult to manage in terms of damages or items being lost. We started pizzas in 2012 and have always used the same pizza base manufacturer and were the best when we researched them. We do top them ourselves so we can change and combination of toppings. During your stay it was our sons 18th birthday and had family visiting with us and had a BBQ in our garden. We did go inside our house around 10.30, admittedly we had music playing inside and can only apologise for any noise which would have only been when anyone went outside into our garden. We were always aware of the door being left open by young children. It was around 11.45pm when our family members went home. We did have a 4 people staying in a wigwam that were celebrating a 30th Birthday and they did use the hot tub beyond 10pm which is the time we ask them not to be used. Our members of staff did monitor this and did remind them of the time but had to go ask them twice. Thank you

Amazing- loved every minute!

nescafequeen, Northumberland, UK
Just back from a couple of nights glamping in one of the running water wigwams as a family of 4. Everything was fabulous from start to finish! Lovely staff who made the trip so exciting and memorable for our children during the animal feeding sessions, great facilities (all super clean and comfortable) and excellent service being able to hire barbecues and fire pits. Great location being only 5 minutes from the village shops and almost equal distance to Vindolanda/Hadrian's Wall etc. We have made some fabulous memories here for our children and can't wait to come back! Love from the Thompsons :)

Herding Hill Farm, Luxury 5 Star Caravan, Camping & Glamping Site replied: Thank you for your feedback and its great to create memories.

Great little campsite

It was a great site with hot shower block, laundry facilities etc. You can hire bbqs and the shop has basic provisions. Our little wigwam had a table and benches that turned into a double bed, which was great. There was a fridge and kettle which was good. We misunderstood the 'laundry facilities' and were expecting them to provide bedding, even at additional cost. They don't provide this, which made for an interesting couple of nights. Probably our fault rather than theirs. Also, the shop is only open at very specific times so you need to bear that in mind, although Haltwhistle village is only a mile or so away.
