Good even when it rains

Janice's well-equipped and welcoming guest house was a real find. Our hostess was a fount of information and also could arrange discounts at a number of places. Our ground-floor room overlooked the estuary. If bad weather drives you back to Westlea early in the afternoon, just help yourself to tea and cakes from the breakfast room. There is a huge upstairs lounge where you can read and admire Janice's collection of porcelain. Do take Janince's advice and book the local restaurants well in advance; even in mid-September they were very busy.

What a find in our hostess with the mostest..Janice

Lovely house and super rooms..most newly updated / en suite and a hostess / owner who really wants you to have a good stay. Tour first of your room with all amenities explained and additional requirements offered as required. Breakfasts are first class, with a menu so vast, I'd challenge anyone who could have the complete 'Westlea Fried Breakfast...all served by a multitude of local staff who all have a great friendly and service ethic. Can't praise enough the stay (Golf Society) our 9 / 10 members had..if you try it and you don't enjoy.. well increase your happy pill dose!!

A comfortable stay let down by breakfast

As most reviews have said Janice has a heart of gold and we could not have wished for a better host or welcome. We were two couples and stayed in the Chinese and Balloon rooms. Both rooms were comfortable and well equipped with en-suites, TV's and tea making facilities. In the balloon room on the ground floor the only issue was that the central heating was on so that it was too hot at night....thermostats on the radiators would be better to allow for control. For breakfast there was a good choice of both cereal and cooked (including kippers) however we felt that the service was a little chaotic and could be made much more efficient. It would be far easier for both the guests and staff if juices were available for self service. Likewise for toast it would be far simpler to provide a toaster so that guests could help themselves to hot toast. With guests helping themselves this would allow the kitchen staff to concentrate on cooking simple, fresh meals; unfortunately the cooked breakfast left a little to be desired. Pre-cooked and then trying to keep warm is never as good as being freshly prepared and served. This was a shame because Janice is a star and if breakfast had been better we would have given 5 stars. The only other comments would be that we were a little surprised to find the rooms had been made up while at breakfast and before we had checked out. One of our party wanted a quick shower after breakfast but the towels had disappeared!Lastly payment by card was not possible which was a surprise especially given the large amounts of cash required.

Comfortable & Quiet B&B

Stayed for four nights in August. Good location 5 minutes walk from pubs and restaurants. It is in a quiet road near the Aln estuary. There is a golf course in the village and a sandy beach. It is within easy driving distance of Berwick, Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle and many other places to visit including Alnwick Castle 15 minutes away. Alnmouth Station is nearly two miles away where you can catch trains on East Cost main line to Berwick and Edinburgh. The owner Janice is very helpful as are all her staff. A full breakfast is included. Wifi was working.

Super accomodation in great location

We stayed 5 nights at this well located guest house overlooking the estuary and only a short walk from the vast beaches and the delightful village of Alnmouth. Your main host Janice is a fount of information about the area, the local amenities, discounts, and dining places which are all just a short walk away. Just ask. Parking is free on the driveway and on the road outside also, and we had two cars and never had any problem. Also Janice gives you a parking disc for Alnwick which is really helpful. In Alnmouth itself parking is free although you are in easy walking distance of the town's amenities from the guest house. Slight confusion over rooms at the start as we thought we were being given the Purple Room when we phone booked. However Janice showed us around three of the other rooms and we chose the Balloon Room on the ground floor rear. It was freshly decorated/refurbished with a lovely en suite with bath and shower facilities and spotlessly clean and fresh. Always hot water available. Great comfy bed with cosy duvet and soft pillows. Tea and coffee facilities in room and cake available from the dining area was a nice touch. We thought it might be a noisier room being on the ground floor and near to the kitchen and the hosts living and working areas but it was peaceful there and we slept soundly. No problem to order breakfast the day before. Plenty of choice, hot or cold, and I would imagine most tastes catered for. It is a cosy wee dining room when the guest house is full( and I suspect most times it is) and there was a little bit of confusion in allocating the correct meals to the correct table at the correct time. However kept the guests amused and soon lots of small talk made for a very pleasant atmosphere. Good exchanges of information about places visited and trips taken and the like made breakfasts chatty and friendly. Just like Janice herself. So we were very impressed. Definitely a well run guest house of quality and it was obvious that they get many repeat visitors as we spoke with other guests. We hope to be back too. Remember payment is by cash or cheque only. There is no ATM in Alnmouth. The Post Office offers a cash withdrawal service during it's normal opening hours only. Don't ignore Janice's warnings to book your restaurant. She will do this for you and possibly get you a Janice Discount too!! They do get almost surprisingly busy especially Thursday to Sunday and some are not open all days. Alnmouth was lovely. We had exceptionally good weather and made good use of the huge stretches of grand beaches just minutes away from the guest house where you could walk literally for miles on the beach or along the coastal path to neighbouring villages and pub lunches. A dog walkers paradise too judging by the number of dogs exercising on the beach and in the water. Glad to say that we found no evidence of dog fouling. Alnmouth is also a good base for visiting the many castles and places of interest in Northumberland. Also so lovely to return to in the evening to dine out in fine restaurants just a short walk away from Westlea. Sure lovely weather helped make this a cracking break for us but it is a great location and Janice and staff made us so welcome.
