Great people, great location, great stay!

We stayed two nights at the Grey Bull and it was a lovely stay. We stayed in a family sized room that had a large living and sleeping area and an ample bathroom. The Inn is only a short 2-3 minute walk from the center of Haltwhistle and only another couple minutes to the train and bus station. If you require public transport the bus trip to Hadrian's Wall and many Roman forts is short and scenic. There is also a walking trail which begins just to the side of the Inn that weaves its way through some beautiful countryside along a stream. Haltwhistle is a lovely, quiet, and small town that is both friendly and bucolic. The Inn provides an ample and delicious breakfast that is completely changeable to fit the patron's taste. Breakfast is large enough to keep even the most avid walker or Roman historian going well into the afternoon. The service is very friendly and willing to share information about the town and the region to inquisitive customers. To cap it off the host is a very kind and jolly gentleman who was kind enough to go out of his way to send us a pair of misplaced glasses when we left for London. I would certainly stay here again if my travels ever lead me to Northumberland again. Cheers!
Excellent family stopover

We really enjoyed our stay at this friendly, family-run B&B. We were warmly welcomed and found everything we needed in the fresh, homely rooms. The bathrooms were kitted out thoughtfully with useful items such as plasters, sewing kit, razor and cotton wool pads. We particularly liked the "real" shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in family-sized bottles; much better quality and better for the environment than the usual disposable mini-bottles. The showers were powerful and hot and the beds comfortable. Breakfast was delicious with wide range of high quality ingredients and good home cooking. The strawberries, berries and croissants were a delight and service friendly. We will definitely stay here again if we are in the Northumberland!
friendly and convenient

We stayed at the Grey Bull intending to visit Vindolanda the day following. It was perfectly fine, friendly, and agreeable. Haltwhistle overall does not amount to much, and there is not a great deal to do nor see, nor much choice of eating place
Don't halt in Haltwhisle!

Having been totally spoilt at Abbey Bridge, it was perhaps unfortunate for the Grey Bull to be our next stop, and inevitably struggle in comparison. The breakfast was fine, and being on a walking holiday, the latest decor and all the trimmings were perhaps not vital. But it has to be said, that the Grey Bull could undoubtedly do with an extensive makeover in order to justify its very high marks on trip advisor. Haltwhistle itself offered very little in terms of enticing pubs and restaurants, in fact nothing worth mentioning, apart from the acceptable Indian , the Red Fort.
The Grey Bull replied: While we would like to thank you for choosing to stay at The Grey Bull, we are a little surprised by your comments, you noted the up to date decor and indeed in the eighteen months we have been here we have embarked on a £70,000 re-furbishment, which is almost completed with just two bedrooms remaining to have the upgrade. It is always our aim to go that extra mile to satisfy our customers, many of whom return over and over again, so we hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you back and discussing your value comments in person.
As a world traveller I have been fortunate enough to sample many hotels/b&bs over the years and this place ranks up there with the best. I stayed here on and off for over 2 weeks and stayed in most of the rooms and I was not disappointed once. Super clean rooms and well maintained, Prices in high season were very reasonable and the owners and staff were very helpful. If you're travelling through as a tourist or just making a local stop I highly recommend here.
