Overview

St Cuthbert's House was awarded 'England's Best B&B 2014' by VisitEngland - and also Bronze & Silver medals at their national Awards in 2015 & 2016 too.

St Cuthbert’s House is a luxurious, award-winning B&B in a 200 year-old former chapel - a unique and stunning renovation, situated in Seahouses, near Bamburgh on the beautiful Northumberland coast. It’s just a stroll along the beach to Bamburgh Castle, and a short drive to Alnwick Castle & Gardens, or Lindisfarne – Holy Island. You'll be situated at the very heart of the beautiful Northumberland Coast.

We have a page dedicated to walking the Northumberland Coast Path (and the coastal sections of St Oswald's Way) which you really should check out if you're following that route.

St Cuthbert's House is VisitEngland 5-star Gold-award accommodation, and has won the top awards at the North-East Tourism Awards every year since 2009. We've also been amongst the medals at the national EnjoyEngland Awards for Excellence in 2011,2014,2015 & 2016. Our Awards are your reassurance - you're not 'taking a chance' when you book at St Cuthbert's House. Do please check out our Awards page, and also our Guest Comments page and Tripadvisor reviews, to see what our guests have said. (But please book direct, rather than through Tripadvisor!  Thanks.)

It's a peaceful, unique and very special place to stay. This lovely, historic Grade II listed building has been tastefully renovated to provide you with beautiful, luxury Bed and Breakfast accommodation, brimming with high-quality facilities. We've taken care of every detail in your room, including the sumptuous pocket-sprung SuperKing-sized beds, with lovely crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, gorgeous duvets and king sized pillows - after taking in some fresh, clear Northumberland air, you'll sleep deeper and softer than ever before.

In the morning, you can enjoy a fabulous breakfast, choosing from an extensive and locally-sourced menu; local sausage and bacon from our butcher, free-range eggs from a nearby farm, or dishes made with traditional oak-smoked fish from the Seahouses smokehouse - birthplace of the original kipper.

All rooms are set as 6' SuperKing doubles, and some can be set as 3’ twin bed configuration, and each offers: • High quality beds with crisp Egyptian cotton sheets • Luxurious deep pillows and duvets • LCD flat-panel TV & DVD • CD/DAB radio • Nespresso coffee machine • Kettle with a wide range of drinks • Salon-quality Hairdryer • Solid wooden hand-built furniture • Plenty of fluffy white towels, dressing gowns and slippers • Supply of indulgent Gilchrist & Soames' toiletries in your bathroom. • Free internet access, via wifi or network ports

The Aidan Room This first floor double room is a south-facing front room, with a beautiful original arched frosted glass window, which lets the morning light flood into the richly coloured room.

The en suite bathroom has a very large shower enclosure, so there’s plenty of room to turn around as you take an intense shower amidst decadent black and chrome. However, it's worth pointing out that the entrance to this shower is via a door which is just 15" wide - so if you are very generously-proportioned then this detail can be important!

The Columba Room This first floor double room is another stunning south-facing front room, with a beautiful original arched and frosted window. The en suite bathroom has a very large shower enclosure, offering a very satisfying shower-experience amidst a rich setting of chrome, black and deep red. However, it's worth pointing out that the entrance to this shower is via a door which is just 15" wide - so if you are very generously-proportioned then this detail can be important!

The Brigid Room This quiet first floor room floods with afternoon sunlight. The ensuite bathroom has a comfortable bath for you to soak in, with classic, heavy chrome fittings, and a shower area at one end.

The Hild Room Another first floor room which fills with afternoon sunlight - and which offers a glimpse of Bamburgh Castle over the rooftops! Again, the ensuite bathroom has both luxurious bath and shower.

The Oswald Room One of our two ground floor bedrooms, giving very easy level access from the car park. The sunlight streams in during the late afternoon and evening, bringing the classic, subtle colours to life. The luxurious en suite bathroom has a bath, with an enlarged shower-cubicle area at one end

The Bede Room Ground floor room, offering easy, level access to the room from the car park, and into the dining room and all communal areas of the house. It is therefore particularly suitable for guests with mobility problems. Slightly larger en suite bathroom, with a walk-in wetroom making for a really decadent showering experience. The bathroom can be equipped with grab rails if required by less mobile guests.

Your Breakfast If you fancy treating yourself to a traditional, hearty Northumbrian Breakfast whilst you're here, you'll enjoy the highest quality ingredients, beautifully prepared and elegantly presented on fine bone china. And even if you're watching your waistline, you can enjoy it with a (relatively!) clear conscience, because none of it sees a frying pan!

We source sausages and bacon from our award-winning local butcher. His meat comes from locally-reared and fully traceable stock, and he’s a passionate advocate of high-quality local produce.

Our eggs come from free-ranging hens on a nearby farm, and the yolks are so bright and yellow you almost need sunglasses.

Also on the menu you'll find delicious kedgeree, made with oak-smoked haddock from the Seahouses smokehouse. Of course, since Seahouses is the birthplace of the original kipper, our breakfast menu includes kipper fillet, and home-made kipper pate too.

There’s always a range of Specials on the menu too, so typically you’ll have ten delicious main courses to choose from – there’s something for you, whatever you like to eat!

You can also help yourself from the buffet table too, stocked with fruit, cereals and juices, and preserves and honey produced by artisan local producers.

And of course we can cater for special diets, so just tell us if there are things you need - or need to avoid.

We’re fully licensed too, and as a speciality of our well-stocked bar we offer a wide range of excellent hand-crafted beers brewed exclusively in Northumberland including our very own 'St Cuthbert's House' beer, brewed for us by the passionate people at The Durham Brewery

Perfectly located, with easy access to Northumberland's amazing coast and country, its expansive, pristine beaches, big skies and wide, open horizons...

Overnight stay

Joanne L, London, United Kingdom
Excellent bed and breakfast accommodation in a beautifully renovated chapel. Jeff and Jill's attention to detail in the pre stay information they send out and in their home ensured that we had a perfect overnight stay. Our room was warm and welcoming with a very comfortable bed, a spotlessly clean and well appointed ensuite bathroom and tea/coffee making facilities. Prior to our stay we had booked a local restaurant for our evening meal, as recommended by Jeff and Jill and it was exactly as they had said in terms of location, atmosphere, food and cost. Breakfast at St. Cuthberts was excellent, with a few welcome extras such as stewed apple to go with the fruit/yoghurt/cereal and locally sourced ingredients for a very tasty cooked breakfast. The best bacon we had eaten all week during our tour of Northumberland! We would highly recommend St Cuthberts as a place to stay.

Excellent short break at St Cuthbert's House

Audrey W, Chester, United Kingdom
We had a great couple of nights at St Cuthbert's and enjoyed the live music session on the first night. Jeff and Jill are friendly and hospitable hosts of this well refurbished old chapel. The breakfasts are the best with a wide choice and served in a friendly and prompt manner. We are regular visitors and I highly recommend this as a place to stay to explore Northumberland.

St Cuthbert's House replied: It's a real privilege that you want to return regularly, and we look forward to seeing you again later in the year! Thanks for your review.

A really friendly and welcoming stay at St Cuthbert's House. We had a lovely weekend , the rooms are well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The beds are amazing, breakfasts faultless and the house itself has been very stylishly converted from a former chapel. A very comfortable lounge area completes your stay.

St Cuthbert's House replied: We're pleased you enjoyed your stay, thanks for your review.

Delightful and Charming

keithtabram, Hartlepool, United Kingdom
Just returned after spending 3-days in this charming restored old Chapel. Situated in a quiet residential district called 'North Sunderland' it is only a 10-12 minute walk for the centre of Seahouses Six rooms, four on the first floor and two on the ground floor, we stayed in the Brigid room overlooking the private car park at the rear. Not large but very comfortable with all the requirements you would need for your stay. Quality is the theme within the room and the rest of the house, including the lovely lounge and breakfast room. The choice for breakfast is extensive and you are certainly spoilt for choice. A wonderful way to start you day before venturing out to explore beautiful Northumberland. Your hosts Jeff & Jill are a lovely warm couple who will ensure your stay is perfect and will organise anything you are not sure about. Jeff is front of house whilst Jill is in the background (kitchen) however this is a team effort and it shows. Plenty of eateries in the centre of Seahouses, so leave the car enjoy the fresh air as you make your way into town. A great base for your away break, I'm sure like my wife and I you will thoroughly enjoy your stay. Keith & Sue Tabram

St Cuthbert's House replied: Thanks for your review, and we hope to see you here again soon.

Excellent in every way

kwholidays, London, United Kingdom
We had a great two nights here. Jeff and Jill were really welcoming and so helpful with advice and suggestions. I also used their website for recommendations for places to eat and trip to Farne Islands and all were excellent. Beautiful bedroom, delicious breakfasts with locally sourced ingredients and so kind to accommodate requests for baked beans! We'd love to visit again.

St Cuthbert's House replied: We're pleased you enjoyed your stay, and we hope we'll see you both again. Thanks for your review.
