Holmhead Guest House sits in a beautifully quiet location in a sheltered valley next to the Tipalt Burn and beneath the ruins of Thirlwall Castle.  Built in 1800 with Wall stone, the house is bordered by open fields and has stunning views south towards the North Pennines, whilst to the north lies the Northumberland National Park and Thirlwall Castle. Holmhead is built over the foundations of Hadrian’s Wall and is directly on the Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Wall National Trails.

All rooms have great views, have ensuite shower and wc and tea and coffee-making facilities. Our breakfasts are delicious and generous and use local produce wherever possible, including free-range eggs, Northumberland sausage and bacon. Special diets are not a problem (although we do prefer advanced notice where possible) There is a large guest lounge with Freesat TV and DVD, bookshelves and games and complimentary wi-fi

Our location, directly on The Hadrian’s Wall Path and Pennine way make us an ideal stop-off for walkers, and we’re only 250m off the Hadrian’s Wall Cycle Trail. For evening meals, there’s a local pub which is a pleasant half-mile stroll away and serves great food and real ales.

For those staying for longer breaks, we’re ideally situated for exploring all the Hadrian’s Wall sites and museums, the North Pennines, Lake District, Tyne, Wear and Tees Dales, The Northumberland National Park and the stunning coastlines. We’re only about an hour’s drive from Newcastle and about half an hour from Carlisle.

There are a number of local walks, either along the national trail or local circular walks through some of the most spectacular (and peaceful) scenery in the country. We’re always happy to help with advice or map loans wherever possible.

At Holmhead, we can also offer self-catering accommodation in our two-bedroom cottage or, for backpackers and cyclists on a budget, we offer camping barn facilities.

Hadrian’s Wall is a World Heritage Site. It crosses from coast to coast of Northern England for 73 Miles, and is a breathtaking sight. Our bed and breakfast accommodation near Hadrian’s Wall also contains stones obtained from the wall.

You can visit long stretches of remaining wall; archaeological excavations of the wall and its eight remaining forts along the route, there are also 11 museums. Most are open all year.

Great Little B&B on the Pennine Way

LucyBCBarnwell, Bakewell, United Kingdom
After our longest day of walking - this was a welcome B&B right on the path. The room was lovely. The breakfast was hearty and the packed lunch was good too. Just what was needed on such a tiring day.

Great location

Richard G,
This place is right on the wall path which is great but it could be cleaner and the landlord can come across a bit abrupt, he seemed most put out that i asked if I could pay by card, although he did let me pay by card, in this day and age (with all the technology available) I didn't want to be carrying lots of cash whilst walking the wall. Next time I might try somewhere else but if need be I would go back.

Ok stay

I arrived at the guest house at 9.30pm having been walking Hadrian's wall since 7.30am from Carlisle on the 20th July 2016 having walked 35miles so was very tired. I was aware in their instructions that I had to be there at 7pm so I rang them at 6.30 to explain I was still a couple of hours away. They said that would be ok. Upon arriving at the guest house and checking in, I found their service ok but at the same time quite rude (in their tone of voice). The acommodation itself was excellent and I had a really great sleep. The accommodation was perfectly located right alongside the Hadrian's wall path. I would definitely recommend the guest house for accommodation and location purposes, but their customer service could be improved a lot (I have worked in customer service for 12 years so know what makes great customer service). They could have been more sympathetic to tired walkers. I definitely wouldn't recommend on the experience of their customer service

Fantastic cottage central to Hadrian's Wall

Erin9496, Ottawa
2 Canadian couples enjoyed a full week at this well-equipped cottage. Thirlwall Castle was a glorious site outside our bedroom window, a delightful view every morning. We had busy days hiking about Hadrian's wall visiting Vindolanda, Housesteads, & Chester forts, among others. We took in the market at Greenhead for local foodstuffs, shopped in nearby Haltwhistle, had hairy drives on narrow roads & one-way streets, mastered the narrow metal farm bridge, delighted in the farm animals & fresh air & all the wonderous scenery every day we went about. Our meals were home-made by us & delicious, especially after our outdoor activities. We slept comfortably every night. Judy & Alan were gracious hosts who were welcoming & helpful. Truly a great stay & fantastic historical cottage near all sites along Hadrian's Wall.

Wonderful location, with history all around.

We picked this Guest house because of it's location on Hadrian's Wall. It was a wonderful find with a great breakfast overlooking the ruins of an old castle on the hill. Judy offered a ton of information about the history of the wall and site of the guest house. She also recommended the Greenhead pub where we enjoyed a lovely, warm, evening meal on a cold, wet, March night, Everything about this experience was amazing. It was all we imagined. We hope to return to use as a base to walk the trail along Hadrian's Wall. Be sure to use Judy's directions, otherwise you end up on the wrong side of the river.
