Overview

WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

Book early .....

JanetnBarry, Bradford
Oh boy .... where do I start - Pauline the wonderfully friendly lady of the house who proudly showed us the B&B with its homely comforts and everything you could possible need for a relaxing stay or John the ex Chef who cooks the most fantastic breakfasts ( from a wide choice ) and even more fantastic evening meals. As I mentioned before it's the little thoughtful touches like flowers from Johns garden in the jug of water with the meal, the candles on the table and the personal attention from both hosts. I could go on and on ( but I won't) I would like to highly recommended Henshaw Barn B&B but make sure you book early as Pauline regularly turns people away through being fully booked.

Henshaw Barn replied: You booked your one night stay with us almost a year ago (a long time) so on meeting you and discovering how well travelled you were, it was good to find that we did not disappoint........Thankyou for drawing attention to what - for you - were the highlights of your stay, and for taking the time to write such a lovely, upbeat review. You were such appreciative guests, who (on leaving) voiced the intention of returning for a longer stay next year. Hopefully, all being well, that will happen........You may need to "book early!" With every good wish, Pauline and John.

"May all your guests leave as friends."

Emily and David G, Keene, New Hampshire
This saying is cross stitched on a pillow at Henshaw Barn, and it is the truest description of our feelings after staying there for two nights during our Hadrian's Wall walking holiday. From the moment we arrived , cold and wet after hiking 15 miles in a driving rain, John and Pauline met us with a warm welcome and a sense of caring that helped us relax. They made us feel like family ... showing concern for our comforts, providing amazing food, and taking time to get to know us. And, we genuinely enjoyed getting to know them. Amongst their talents, Pauline is a knowledgeable gardener and John is a skilled chef! Their home is beautifully situated in the charming village of Henshaw. It is impeccably decorated and adorned with family photos, many books and a lovely art collection. Our stay with them is one of the highlights of our trip. John and Pauline are superb hosts! We look forward to keeping In touch with them in the future, and returning to Henshaw Barn soon!

Henshaw Barn replied: Such a very personal, very kind, and very lovely review - our thanks a hundredfold....... And to be 'one of the highlights' of your Hadrian's Wall walking holiday (when there have to be so many highlights) is praise indeed - big thanks to you both. And how lucky we were to meet you, as getting to know you was such a pleasure - with your 2 night stay over all too quickly! We plan to keep in touch - (all the while very much hoping that you WILL be able to make that return visit) - and were/or when that happens, what a treat! In the meantime, our best and warmest wishes, Pauline and John.

If Carlsberg ran B&B's.....

Craig J, Guildford, United Kingdom
Pauline and John are the perfect hosts - it was our first time staying with them and yet it felt like visiting old friends. We were in the area for a 50th Birthday Party and John even drove us to the venue and back at the end of the night! Views from the B&B are amazing, the room was wonderful, breakfast was incredible as John is a professional cook (I'm not a big black pudding fan but John persuaded me to have a slice of his own recipe BP with my breakfast and I was so glad I did). Faultless!

Henshaw Barn replied: We are so pleased to hear how much you enjoyed your overnight stay with us - and all the more so on such a happy "full on" 50th birthday party occasion - when a quick turn around became such a necessity! It was extremely kind of you to review us - taking on board the brevity of your stay - and we very much appreciate all your recommendations, and in particular the warmth of your response. Many thanks from both of us. Should you have reason to return to the north east, then we hope that we may perhaps see you again. Our very best wishes to you both, Pauline and John.

Back again

Stuart W, Backbarrow, United Kingdom
My wife and I can't stay away. This is our third time at Henshaw Barn with Pauline and John. This is a fabulous b & b wth exceptional food. If you are looking to be well looked after this is the perfect place for you. Faultless

Henshaw Barn replied: It's hard to express just how much we value and appreciate your unstinting support....you visited us for the very first time 3 years ago - (when you were on your honeymoon!) - and we were newly open. And you have returned every year subsequently. And as always, it's such a huge pleasure and privilege to share in your happiness, and furthemore be able to spend some precious time with you....... Many thanks for your warm, kind, and very generous review.... Sending you all our good wishes, Pauline and John.

The perfect place to chi[[ and rewind!

peteandmarg2017, Manchester, United Kingdom
Thank you both so much for looking after us so wonderfully, we could not have been pampered more. Pauline and John really did put us first and ensured that everything was just spot on ...from the welcome to our depart. There is a very special feeling at Henshaw Barn and it is in the detail ! The Barn is so cosy and relaxing, the food is to die for! John is a wonderful cook providing a full and scrumptious breakfast with loads of choices; the evening meals can be arranged on request. The food is gorgeous and locally sourced... you two should be proud of yourselves! We have stayed twice at Henshaw and have slept in both bedrooms -absolutely gorgeous ... so comfortable and pretty! We really could not have asked for anything else, thanks for a great time and for telling us so much about here to go and what to see! Such lovely hosts! The location and surrounding countryside is so beautiful it really as the perfect place !

Henshaw Barn replied: Wonderful to know that you found Henshaw Barn to be the "perfect place" to chill, relax, and rewind - we think it's pretty special too - and are delighted when guests feel as we do. We are glad to find how much you enjoyed your time with us - and we hope that it will not be too long before we see you again. Many thanks for your warm and very generous review, which is very welcome, and very much appreciated. With all our good wishes, Pauline and John.
