Overview

WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

Marvelous hospitality

TravelingCS1972, United States
My wife and I stayed here for a few nights and had a marvelous time. Pauline and John greeted us warmly from the very first moment and were kind and generous hosts throughout our stay. The food is worth special mention: Many B&Bs serve very credible food, but the meals we had were all the sort of thing you might well find in a restaurant. John is a former professional chef and it really shows. I particularly recommend the twice baked souffle (John even shared his recipe with me) and the black pudding (homemade and much different from the usual). Henshaw Barn is located close to Hadrian's Wall and associated sites like Vindolanda and Housesteads -- and that's just those within distance for a long walk. The scenery is amazing, and the many footpaths and unpaved roads in the area made for very nice strolls. We had such a great time.

A truly lovely experience!!

Fiona W, York, England, United Kingdom
Simply one of the nicest establishments we have stayed at. We had a very comfortable double room with every detail you could need to hand. We were very well looked after by Pauline & John starting with tea & scones on our arrival, dinner each night was excellent and the breakfasts were also of a very high standard. We were made to feel most welcome, as if we were visiting old friends. We will hopefully make a return stay in the future.

Henshaw Barn replied: And certainly, were you to make a return stay sometime in the future, then you would be most welcome. Thankyou for taking the time to provide us with such positive feedback, and also for being such pleasant, and friendly guests. It was good to meet and get to know you - and the fact that you enjoyed a happy and comfortable stay with us, and felt "well looked after", are great recommendations. With many thanks - and all our very best wishes, Pauline and John.

Best B&B experience!!

EdindburghJesse, edinburgh
Our stay at Henshaw Barn was truly amazing from beginning to end. We were greeted with tea and scones by John with a view over the gorgeous garden, and lots of lovely chat. He set the bar high! It really is an experience to stay with John and Pauline... our room was fabulous, as was the adjoining bathroom and little sitting room for guests. Lots of lovely little touches, and an abundance of books to read...I didn't want to leave!! Dinner was a real treat, with lots of lovely little touches from John's allotment, and if you're lucky you will be sharing the table with another lovely couple as we did. Lots of wine flowing, we felt like we were sharing with old friends. I would definitely, definitely recommend Henshaw Barn, book early so you are not disappointed......

Henshaw Barn replied: Thank you for your very lovely, and very glowing review..............to find that that you had an "amazing stay"and "didn't want to leave" is just so heartwarming.....and it helps us believe that we may perhaps be getting something right as we welcome people into our home? We certainly hope so! The "chef connection" kept us on our toes, but you were the most appreciative, and friendly of house guests - and it was such a pleasure to spend time with you. And it may well be that you WILL definitely find time to make a return visit? After all you are not so far away! And how lovely it would be to see you again Special thanks to both of you for all your recommendations, and for your warm and generous support. Wth all our good wishes, Pauline and John.

First rate B&B in beautiful part of the country.

mainns, London, United Kingdom
Impressive, consistent high standard all round from room and shower to breakfast and light bite supper. Such attention to detail and quality. Convenient location for the range of things to see and do in this beautiful part of the world.

Henshaw Barn replied: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your altogether brief time with us on your nostalgic pilgrimage to Northumberland.......and as you had quite a busy itinerary, many, many thanks for making time on your return home to speak so kindly of us. We hope your journey north proved pleasureable.....and that it may even have managed to exceed all your expectations..... And certainly, were you to return to this area, then it would be lovely to see you again. With all our best wishes, Pauline and John.

Hadrian's Wall Stopover

cncgroup, Manchester, United Kingdom
Three of us enjoyed a delightful stay here with Pauline and John for two nights on our walking holiday along Hadrian's Wall. The upstairs rooms are beautifully appointed with the added bonus of a guest sitting room where we could enjoy a relaxing drink and read after dinner. The food at Henshaw Barn was superb, chef John catering to all our needs with beautifully presented dishes. All in all this was a delightful and hospitable stay in a welcoming house which was a highlight of our trip.

Henshaw Barn replied: Taking on board the demands imposed by "walking the wall" it was lovely to find that we were one of the highlights of your trip. You stayed with us for two nights, and you were such agreeable house guests. We very much enjoyed meeting you, and we are pleased that Henshaw Barn provided you with warmth, comfort, great food, and good company. Thank you for making the the time to post a review - your generous and supportive comments are very welcome, and very much appreciated. With thanks.....and all our best wishes, Pauline and John.
